James Monroe Dean, Sr. and Lucinda Mitchell Dean
Portrait of James Monroe Dean, Sr. (1834-1902) and Lucinda Mitchell Dean (1834-1911), great-grandparents of Sylvia Stanback. Dean was a churchman, philanthropist, and magistrate in Greensboro, and also owned Dean's Brickyard, which supplied bricks for numerous structures in Greensboro.

Maps showing the contemporary locations of Providence Baptist Church and A&T State University in 1907, 1925, and 1953. The maps show Dean Street and Mitchell Street, which were named after family members, James Monroe Dean, Sr. and his wife's father. Both streets were eliminated during "urban renewal" in the 1960s. The Mitchell family donated the land to build the original Providence Baptist Church.
