Description
This 1959 photograph shows the post boxes inside the North Spencer Residence Hall . The back of photo reads "Example of locked mail boxes (in dormitories) . Mail no longer distributed in Central Post Office after these were installed in dorms. " Prior to 1910 , mail was distributed through the dormitories . In 1910 , a lock-box Post Office was installed in the basement of Administration Building . In 1932 , in a general reorganization of the campus after the library fire of September , 1932 , the Post Office moved to the Students’ Building until it was razed in 1949 . In 1949 , the Post Office was located in the basement of South Spencer Residence Hall until it moved to the Elliott Student Union in 1953 . For a time , mail was distributed through locked boxes in the dormitories , but after the Dining Halls were renovated in1987/1988 , post office boxes were added to the Atrium , which remains the main point of distribution .

Folder description
The Spencer Residence Hall , designed by W . C . Holleyman of Greensboro , North Carolina , consists of two connecting building ; North Spencer Residence Hall , which opened in 1904 , and South Spencer Residence Hall , which opened in 1907 . The building was named in honor of Cornelia Phillips Spencer , a poet , social historian , and journalist . She was instrumental in having the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill reopened after Reconstruction . In 1949 until 1953 , the campus post office was located in the basement of South Spencer Residence Hall .
