Ferguson, responding to criticism of the event, defended the decision to allow the forum on the grounds of its educational and noted that the movement “cannot be wished away simply because it is controversial.” Ferguson'; s comments were widely reported, and he and William Friday, president of the university system, received numerous letters following the statement
