Description
A
letter
from the
President
of the
State
Normal
and
Industrial
College
to
Thomas
Dickens
concerning
the
illness
of his
daughter
,
Esther
W
.
Dickens
.
McIver
writes
that
Esther
is
"not
improving
so
rapidly
as
we
had
reason
to
suppose
she
would.
"
"
McIver
writes
that
several
students
have
gotten
ill
and that the
two
physicians
,
Dr
.
W.P
.
Beall
or
Dr
.
Anna
Gove
thought
the
illness
came
from
local
sources
. The
doctors
say
"there
is
no
case
of
typhoid
fever.
" He also
points
out
that the
Bulletin
of
Health
lists
a
number
of
malarial
fever
cases
in
many
counties
in the
state
. Also he has been
told
that
many
of the
students
who
are
currently
were
ill
in the
recent
summer
and
fall
before
school
started
.

Mr
.
Thomas
Dickens
,
My
Dear
Sir
:
Your
daughter
,
who
has been
sick
for
several
days
with
chills
,
is
still
confined
to her
bed
and
is
not
improving
so
rapidly
as
we
had
reason
to
suppose
she would.
A
number
of
new
cases
similar
to hers have
developed
within
the
past
week
, and,
while
we
cannot
assign
any
local
cause
therefore
,
yet
the
trouble
is
evidently
a
malarial
one
, and
I
feel
that
you
ought
to
know
that there are a
number
of
cases
similar
to that of
your
daughter
.
In
addition
to
our
regular
resident
physicians
we
have, as
consulting
physician
and
assistant
in the
care
of
patients
,
Dr
.
W.P
.
Beall
, of this
city
,
who
is
a
member
of the
State
Board
of
Health
.
Neither
he
nor
Dr
.
Gove
thought
at
first
that there was any
local
cause
for
chills
and
fever
,
nor
can
they
see
any
cause
for
it
now
. They
assure
me
that there
is
no
case
of
typhoid
fever
.
I
will
call
you
attention
to the
fact
that the
Bulletin
of
Health
for
September
,
published
in
Raleigh
,
gibes
official
information
that there
is
malarial
fever
"in
all
parts
" of a
large
number
of
counties
,
among
them,
Caswell
,
Alamance
,
Guilford
,
Davidson
,
Cabarrus
, and
Mecklenburg
.
I
find
that a
number
of those
students
who
have had
chills
and
some
fever
following
had the
same
trouble
during
the
past
summer
and
fall
before
coming
to
Greensboro
.
Indeed
,
we
always
have
during
the
latter
part
of the
first
month
and in the
second
month
of the
college
year
several
cases
of this
kind
, but the
number
of
cases
we
have
now
is
unusual
, and
I
feel
that
I
would not be
giving
you
full
information
in
regard
to the
matter
without
stating
this
fact
.
Very
truly
yours
,
President
.
