President
McIver
,
Greensboro,N.C.
,
My
dear
Dr.McIver:-
Yours
of
5th
inst.with
enclosures
duly
received
and
all
read
with
interest
.
I
had
already
seen
in the
papers
an
account
of the
absurd
pig
post-mortem,and
the
disclosures
in
Dr.S.'s
letter
are
little
less
ridiculous
. The
whole
thing
reminds
me
of the
actions
of the
mother
partridge
when
one
goes
too
near
her
nest
in her
efforts
to
distract
attention
from the
locality
.
I
would be
glad
to
know
exactly
what
you
found
upon
further
investigation
of the
leaking
pipe,or
rather
of the
ground
where
it
had been.
I
agree
in the
general
opinion
that
it
was
almost
certainly
the
cause
of the
fever,but
by
contaminating
the
water
and not by
throwing
off
the
germs
into the
air
. This
letter
may
be
true
but
I
thik
it
extremely
doubtful
.
Dr.Anderson
reports
that he
did
not
find
any
typhoid
germs
in the
dust
from the
butter-room
and
store-room
. If they had
ever
floated
in the
air
they
must
have
lodged
upon
the
shelves
of the
former
it
seems
to
me#
.
I
await
Abbott's
report
with
interest
.
How
did
the
well
at the
Teague
house
become
infected
?
It
must
have been from the
sewer
so
near
it
.
Please
have that
most
thoroughly
looked
into and
let
me
know
the
result
. Also
communicate
any
new
discoveries
should any be
made
.
I
learn
of the
continued
mortality
with
sincere
regret,but
I
hope
there
may
be
no
more
deaths
. The
fever
seems
to have been of
unusual
severity
.
Please
remember
me
to
Dr.Gove
and
thank
her for her
letter
stating
her
method
in
obtaining
samples
.
Sincerely
yours
,
Rich
H
.
