Description
This photograph shows women browsing inside the bookstore in the Elliott Student Union in September 1965 . The Book Store was located on the first floor of Administration Building from 1925 until 1932 . From 1932 until 1949 , it was situated in the Students’ Building . In 1949 , the Book Store moved to the basement of South Spencer Dormitory and remained there until the completion of Elliott Hall (now Elliott University Center) in1953 , where it found its permanent home . This building , designed by Northrup O’Brien of Winston-Salem , North Carolina , opened in 1953 . It was named in honor of Harriet Wiseman Elliott who came to the College in 1913 and was Dean of Women from 1935 to 1947 . The building was expanded and renovated in 1968 . In April 1974 , the name of the building was changed from Elliott Student Union , commonly known as “Elliott Hall,” to Elliott University Center .
