JOSHUA FIT DE BATTLE OF JERICHO
Marylou India Jackson joined the faculty of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro in 1930. As part of her determined effort to promote the music program at Bennett, she took the College Choir on annual tours to raise scholarship money. Each tour ended with a set of spirituals—many of which she arranged for treble voices since most spiritual settings at that time were scored for male chorus or mixed voices. GARTAN MOTHER’S LULLABY
This haunting lullaby comes from County Donegal in Ireland. Like so much of the literature and music of that country, it is imbued with images of natural beauty and figures from the magical world of the fairies. As the mother sings her child to sleep she conjures up the benevolent, soothing stories of fairyland.
DEAR JOHN, DEAR JOHN (Punctuated by Love?)
The text for these two companion pieces first appeared in the January 1984 issues of Games magazine. It was used as an example in a contest called “Write On!” in which the object was to create an original paragraph that could be punctuated two ways to give very different meanings. Stephen Hopkins, on the faculty at Appalachian State University, has given each version a different musical setting to enhance the meaning imparted by the choice of punctuation. The original text follows.
Dear John: I want a man who knows what love is all about you are generous kind thoughtful people who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior you have ruined me for other men
I yearn for you I have no feelings whatsoever when we’re apart I can be forever happy
will you let me be yours Gloria

PUES QUE NO PUEDO OLVIDARTE
As I cannot forget you, may the devil catch you,
may the devil take you, the devil that is within you!
Elvira, even though you don’t want to marry me, love me, only for a day,
for, marry my life, I live desperately.
If as a reward for my cares, you grow careless with me,
may the devil catch you,
may the devil take you,
the devil that is within you!
KYRIE IN D
Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.
Johann Christian Bach was known as “The London Bach” because of his services as an opera and concert impresario, as well as music master to the Queen. He was the eleventh son of Johann Sebastian Bach and the youngest to live to maturity. He spent a number of years in Italy and it was during this time that he composed the Kyrie in D and began an uncompleted Requiem.
O LUX BEATISSIMA
O Light most blessed, fill the inmost heart of all thy faithful.
Without your grace, there is nothing in us, nothing that is not harmful.

The UNCG School of Music has been recognized for years as one of the elite music institutions in the United States. Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1938, the School offers the only comprehensive music program from undergraduate through doctoral study in both performance and music education in North Carolina. From a total population of approximately 14,000 university students, the UNCG School of Music serves nearly 600 music majors with a full-time faculty and staff of more than sixty. As such, the UNCG School of Music ranks among the largest Schools of Music in the South.
The UNCG School of Music now occupies a new 26 million dollar music building, which is among the finest music facilities in the nation. In fact, the new music building is the second-largest academic building on the UNCG Campus. A large music library with state-of-the-art playback, study and research facilities houses all music reference materials. Greatly expanded classroom, studio, practice room, and rehearsal hall spaces are key components of the new structure. Two new recital halls, a large computer lab, a psychoacoustics lab, electronic music labs, and recording studio space are additional features of the new facility. In addition, an enclosed multi-level parking deck is adjacent to the new music building to serve students, faculty and concert patrons.
Living in the artistically thriving Greensboro—Winston-Salem—High Point “Triad” area, students enjoy regular opportunities to attend and perform in concerts sponsored by such organizations as the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Greensboro Opera Company, and the Eastern Music Festival. In addition, UNCG students interact first-hand with some of the world’s major artists who frequently schedule informal discussions, open rehearsals, and master classes at UNCG.
Costs of attending public universities in North Carolina, both for in-state and out-of-state students, represent a truly exceptional value in higher education.
