Andrew Harley has recently joined the faculty at UNCG as Director
of Accompanying/Vocal Coach. He received a B.A and M.A from
Oxford University, the Artist Diploma from the Royal Northern
College of Music in Manchester and a D.M.A. from the University of
Southern California, studying under John Perry. Previous
appointments have included Occidental College, University of
California Los Angeles, University of Southern California and most
recently the University of California Santa Barbara where he was Head
of Accompanying for the past three years. In addition to these
positions he has also held numerous positions at a variety of summer
schools. For five years he was Director of Chamber Music for the
International Institute for Young Musicians and more recently was
Associate Faculty at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara.
He has been featured on live radio and television broadcasts and
currently serves as the official accompanist for a number of national
competitions. Future projects include a CD recording with flutist Jill
Felber as well as a tour of Mexico, scheduled for 2002.

Suzette Jones, soprano, originally from Memphis, TN, is a second-year
graduate student in Vocal Performance at UNCG. She earned her
Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from the University of
Memphis with additional studies at Brevard College. She has
performed at UNCG as a member of the University Chorale and as
Ceres in the UNCG Opera Theatre production of Orpheus in the
Underworld. Additionally, she has participated in productions of the
Asheville Symphony Chorus as well as the Asheville Lyric Opera.
This fall she will be performing in the ensemble of Greensboro Opera
Company’s production of Verdi’s Otello.
Deborah M. Thacker is a soprano working on her DMA in voice.
Her previous roles with UNCG Opera Theatre include Euridyce
(Orpheus in the Underworld), Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), Miss
Wordsworth (Albert Herring), Sister Constance (Dialogues of the
Carmelites), Cookie (TalkOpera), and Lucy (The Telephone). Mrs.
Thacker has performed with Greensboro Opera Company and
Greensboro Choral Society, as well as in the UNCG Chamber Singers.
One of her most unique performing experiences was as Millie Goat in
the children’s opera Figatroll and the Three Billy Goats Gruff for
UNCG Opera Theatre’s outreach program. A native of Rochester,
N.Y., Mrs. Thacker received her Master of Music in 1998 from UNCG
and her Bachelor of Music from Eastman School of Music in 1995.
Brian Carter, tenor, from High Point, NC, is a first-year graduate
student in Vocal Performance at UNCG. He earned his Bachelor’s
degrees in Music from UNCG and Communications from Appalachian
State University. He sang last summer for Opera North as Benoit and
Parpignol in La Bohème as well as Torquemada in Ravel’s L’Heure
Espagnole. Mr. Carter has appeared in UNCG Opera Theatre
productions as Pluto/Aristeus in Orpheus in the Underworld, Kaspar in
Amahl and the Night Visitors, and the Learned Judge in Trial by Jury.
As a member of the ensemble of Greensboro Opera Company, he has
performed in Carmen, Don Pasquale, Tosca, Un Ballo in Maschera,
and will appear in this Fall’s performance of Verdi’s Otello. This
January, Mr. Carter will perform the role of Turiddu in the UNCG
Opera Theatre production of Cavalleria Rusticana.
James Bumgardner holds the Master of Music degree in voice from
the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he is presently
a member of the voice faculty. He has also served on the voice faculty
at both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Guilford
College. Mr. Bumgardner’s vocal credits include Belcore in
Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, Le Marquis de la Force in Poulenc’s
Dialogues of the Carmelites, Melchior in Menotti’s Amahl and the
Night Visitors, and the Pirate King in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of
Penzance. His oratorio credits include Handel’s Messiah, Fauré’s
Requiem, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, the Magnificat in D and St.
Matthew Passion of J. S. Bach, and the 2001 premier of James
Carlson’s Motets and Marginalia. Mr. Bumgardner also enjoys the
song recital venue, be it as singer or as pianist.
In addition to teaching voice, Mr. Bumgardner is an active
coach/accompanist. He has been the visiting coach for the National
Opera Company, as well as music director for opera and musical
theatre in various venues. A sought-after collaborative artist, he was
recently honored to play a recital with the Metropolitan Opera soprano
Marilyn Mims.
Mr. Bumgardner also maintains an avid interest in choral music, and
has worked with such respected conductors as Cambridge University’s
Stephen Cleobury, Timothy Brown, and Geoffrey Webber. He is
conductor for the chamber series "SummerMusic" in Blowing Rock,
NC, where he also directs the music at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal
Church. His choir has received numerous honors in both the US and
England, including residencies at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in
New York City and Durham Cathedral in England, and has concertised
extensively throughout Great Britain and the eastern US.
