Mario Duella studied music at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi of Milano,
where he received diplomas in Choral Music and Conducting, Organ
Performance, and Organ Composition. He also attended classes on the
interpretation of Italian music with Michel Chapuis, Spanish music with
Montserrat Torrent Sera, and music of Bach with Anton Heiller and Victor
Lukas. His intense artistic activity has taken place in Italy and nearly all of
Europe, USA, Japan, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Canada, Australia, New
Zealand, Hong Kong, Mexico, Iceland, and Malta. He has played with the
Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of RAI of Turin and with several chamber
orchestras, including concerts as a harpsichordist and in duo with singers and
instrumentalists. He has published a series of pieces from Lucca dating from the
18th Century for Paideia-Bärenreiter. He holds the chair of Music Education in
the public Scuola Media of Trivero and is organist and choir director at the
parish church of Portula. He has recorded several LPs and CDs and has also
recorded for various radio and television stations in Europe, USA, Argentina,
Japan, and Canada. He is a member of the Commision Diocesana di Musica
Sacra as a consultant for the restoration of historic organs.
The George M. Thompson Organ was hand crafted during a ten-month period
in 1998-1999 by the Andover Organ Company of Methuen, Massachusetts. In
1998, the company celebrated a distinguished half-century of organ building,
rebuilding, restoration, and maintenance. Its “Opus 111” represents the 111th
completely new organ built by the company since its inception in 1948.
About half the instrument’s cost was paid from the George M. Thompson
Memorial Organ Fund, an endowment established by the UNCG Alumni
Association in 1968 to honor a well-remembered music faculty member who
taught at the University from 1923 until his retirement in 1963.
The tracker (mechanical action) instrument was, as befits a school of music,
essentially designed as a teaching instrument: one suitable for performing all
styles of organ music. Its twenty-eight foot height encompasses nearly two
thousand individual tin and wood pipes distributed among thirty-five ranks (sets
of pipes) controlled by three manuals (keyboards) and a pedalboard.
The organ’s stained ash, oak, and mahogany case complements the cherry-stained
wood floor in the 130-seat elliptically shaped hall. Electrically
controlled banners may be lowered from the walls to adjust acoustics when the
hall is utilized for piano, voice, and instrumental performances not involving the
organ.
