Commentary by David Nelson
Associate Dean, School of Music
The hundreds of photographs and newscasts from the areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina are
indelibly etched in our minds. As if that was not enough, Hurricane Rita seemed to finish what
Katrina started. Faculty and Students in the School of Music were also affected by these images
and stories and immediately started to question, “What can we do?” The answer was simple.
We can do what we do best – perform music! Thus, tonight’s concert is presented in order to
raise funds for the American Red Cross in its hurricane relief efforts. We are hopeful that you will
contribute at the door (on BOTH your way in and your way out!) to this very important cause.
Additionally, do peruse the silent auction items in the Atrium and place your bids. All money
raised by this event will go directly to the American Red Cross. Nothing will be held back for any
other use.
Thanks for being here and for your assistance.

Del cabello mas sutil (Of the softest hair)
Of the softest hair
Which you wear in braids
I shall make a chain
To draw you to my side.
A jug in your house,
My darling, I would like to be,

When you take a drink.
La Rosa y el Sauce (The Rose and the Willow) Carlos Gustavino
The rose opened itself, embracing the willow.
The impassioned tree loved her completely.
But a frivolous maiden has stolen her away.
And the unconsoled willow is mourning his loved one.
