The UNCG School of Music has been recognized for years as one of the elite music institutions in the United States. Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1938, the School offers the only comprehensive music program from undergraduate through doctoral study in both performance and music education in North Carolina. From a total population of approximately 14,000 university students, the UNCG School of Music serves nearly 600 music majors with a full-time faculty and staff of more than sixty. As such, the UNCG School of Music ranks among the largest Schools of Music in the South. The UNCG School of Music now occupies a new 26 million dollar music building which is among the finest music facilities in the nation. In fact, the new music building is the second-largest academic building on the UNCG Campus. A large music library with state-of-the-art playback, study and research facilities houses all music reference materials. Greatly expanded classroom, studio, practice room, and rehearsal hall spaces are key components of the new structure. Two new recital halls, a large computer lab, a psychoacoustics lab, electronic music labs, and recording studio space are additional features of the new facility. In addition, an enclosed multi-level parking deck is adjacent to the new music building to serve students, faculty and concert patrons. Living in the artistically thriving Greensboro—Winston-Salem—High Point “Triad” area, students enjoy regular opportunities to attend and perform in concerts sponsored by such organizations as the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Greensboro Opera Company, and the Eastern Music Festival. In addition, UNCG students interact first-hand with some of the world’s major artists who frequently schedule informal discussions, open rehearsals, and master classes at UNCG. Costs of attending public universities in North Carolina, both for in-state and out-of- state students, represent a truly exceptional value in higher education. Be Thou My Vision The origins of this popular hymn lie in 8th century Ireland and the melody is taken from the tune “Slane,” referring geographically to Slane Hill. Translated into English by Mary F. Byrne in 1905 and versed in a collection of poems entitled “Poem Book of the Gael” by Eleanor Hull, the hymn offers a single voice of devotion rooted in medieval Celtic Christianity. Daemon irrepit callidus György Orbán is a prolific Hungarian composer who has written in a variety of genres. In this motet Orbán creates the frenetic “demonic” atmosphere by his use of syncopated rhythms and imaginative harmonies within inner staccato patterns. “The demon sneaks expertly, tempting the honorable heart; He offers trickery amid praise, dance, and song. However amiably the demon acts, it is still counted less than the heart of Jesus. Poor, passionate, undisciplined demon!” Dona nobis pacem from the Mass in B minor The Mass in B minor, regarded as Bach’s masterpiece of sacred choral music, was not conceived as an entity. Its compositional history encompassed more than the last fifteen years of his life. The final movement, Dona nobis pacem, was probably written in 1748 or 1749 at the completion of a long and creative career. It is a fitting conclusion to Bach’s compositional life – a triumphant (D Major) plea for peace. “Grant us peace.” Die Musici Robert Swift is a Professor at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. In this work Dr. Swift takes the listener on a trip through the ages. From a joyful singing of the German folk tune on which the work is based, to the carefree “doo-bee-doo” section, this light-hearted piece is intended to be enjoyed by singers and audiences alike. Sometimes My Mind Gets Weary Composer George L. Mabry is professor of music and director for the Center for the Creative Arts at Austin Peay University, Clarksville, TN. Plenty Good Room The arrangement of this traditional spiritual is by UNCG alumnus Jesse Padgett, presently a freelance musician in the Philadelphia area. Ave Maria Hail Mary, full of grace art thou The Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, Holy Virgin, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, Both now and in the hour of our death. Amen. Sound Sleep Vaughan Williams composed many choral pieces, including hymn tunes and arrangements of folk songs. “Sound Sleep” is one of his earliest works, composed in 1903 with a text by Christina Rossetti. It beautifully illustrates Vaughan Williams’ text setting skills, and his fondness for triplet/duplet rhythmic motion and keys related by thirds. Dustin Ousley (MM) holds the BA in music from Furman University where he was student conductor for the Furman Singers and sang in the Chamber Choir. Active in musical theatre and opera he recently performed a leading role in the UNCG production of Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah. Eric Poole (DMA) received the BA in music from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the MA in vocal performance from Howard University. From 1993- 2001 he served as instructor and conductor of the University Choir at North Carolina A & T. Heather Williams Potter (DMA) holds the BM in music education from Furman University and the MM in choral music education from Arizona State University. She is Associate Conductor for the Charlotte Children’s Choir and on the staff at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, NC. Kenney Potter (DMA) holds the BM in choral music education from Florida State University and the MM in choral music education from Portland State University. He is an assistant conductor for the Charlotte Children’s Choir and is choir director for First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, NC. Jason Wright (MM) holds the BM in sacred music with an organ concentration from East Carolina University. Currently he is Choirmaster/Organist at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Asheboro, NC. Harlan Zackery (MM) holds the BM in music education (cum laude) from UNCG and presently is Director of Music at Greensboro Christian Church and adjunct faculty at Winston-Salem Bible College. He is the winner of the 2004 University Symphony Orchestra conducting competition. _____ William P. Carroll, Director of Choral Activities and Chair of the Vocal Studies Division, holds degrees from Millsaps College, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He has served as guest conductor for numerous workshops, honor choirs, and clinics, including the North Carolina High School Honors Chorus and All-State Chorus, the North Carolina Junior High All-State Chorus, the Virginia Music Camp, Lake Junaluska Music Week, Eastern Division ACDA Convention, the Fellowship of United Methodist Musicians National Conference, and the Intercollegiate Men's Choruses Association National Convocation. He was awarded the Lara Hoggard Award presented by ACDA for distinguished service to choral music in North Carolina. In addition to his University responsibilities he serves as Editor for Hinshaw Music, Inc. Welborn Young came from Chicago, Illinois where for five years he was the Artistic Director and Conductor of Windy City Performing Arts. The ensembles received enthusiastic reviews in such papers as the Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune, the Reader, and Windy City Times. During the summer of 1998, Young was invited to be a featured conductor at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Netherlands, during an international cultural and music festival. That same summer he was guest conductor of Chicago's Grant Park Symphony Chorus and assisted with the preparation of their first recording. Young has been the Assistant Conductor of the Middle Tennessee Choral Society and Artistic Director and Conductor of the Augustinian Singers of Nashville, Tennessee. He has prepared and conducted the Nashville Symphony Chorus, has appeared as guest conductor with the Nashville Opera Association, and is in high demand as an adjudicator and clinician for choral festivals. He completed the B.M. and the M.A. at Middle Tennessee State University and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. All in green went my love riding The American composer David Diamond composed “All in green” in 1940, using a poem by e.e. cummings. His music is always marked by strong rhythmic drive and frequent use of displaced rhythmic patterns. Deus in Adjutorium Make haste, O God, to deliver me: make haste, O Lord, to help me. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. Ave Maris Stella Hail, Star of the Sea, Loving Mother of God, And Virgin immortal, heaven’s blissful portal! Receiving that “Ave” from the mouth of Gabriel, Reversing the name of “Eva,” established in peace. Break the chains of sinners, bring light to the blind, Drive away our evils, and ask for all good things. Show thyself to be a mother, that, through thee, He may accept our prayers, He who, born for us, Chose to be your Son. O incomparable Virgin, meek above all others, Make us, freed from our faults, meek and chaste. Keep our life pure, make our journey safe, So that, seeing Jesus, we may rejoice together forever. Let there be praise to God the Father, And glory to Christ the most High, And to the Holy Spirit, And to the Three be one honor. Amen. Belle Layotte From Louis Reichwein’s Four Louisiana Creole Folk Songs , the text and melody of each arrangement is taken from Slave Songs of the United States. Though I have wandered every road, none can compare with fair Layotte. Searching in all the towns, traveling through the colony, still I see no beauty there who pleases me as fair Layotte. Jean Babet, my dear friend, if you should pass by her way, send back from fair Layotte, the precious gift she had promised me. Raging her watchman swore, drove me away from Layotte’s door. Do not speak of this song which I composed for fair Layotte. Though I have wandered every road, none can compare with fair Layotte. Musieu Bainjo Look at that dandy, that’s Mister Banjo, oh, how he is so vain. Hat cocked to one side, Mister Banjo. Walking stick in hand, Mister Banjo. Boots that go click-clack, Mister Banjo. Look at that dandy, that’s Mister Banjo, oh, how he is so vain. Ain’t-a That Good News This work is a traditional African-American spiritual. This “jubilee” is characterized by a quick tempo, syncopation and a rhythmic drive. Spirituals are usually characterized by symbolism and the belief in Heaven and a better life after death. This arrangement, while staying true to the melodic and rhythmic foundation of the spiritual, is marked by the use of jazz harmonies. In monte Oliveti On the Mount of Olives he prayed to the Father: “Father, if it can be done, let this cup pass from me. The spirit indeed is ready, but the flesh is weak: Your will be done.” Tristis est anima est Sorrowful is my soul even unto death; Stay here, and watch with me: Now you shall see the mob that will surround me. You shall take flight, and I shall go to be sacrificed for you. The Conductors Danny Buckner (MM) holds the BA in music education from Pfeiffer University and is currently the Director of Music at Union Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC.
