In Memoriam
James Leo Roueché
1923 - 2007
A native of Salisbury, North Carolina, Jim was born on Groundhog Day, February 2, 1923. He
graduated from Guilford College and Oklahoma State A&M with degrees in Physics and
Advanced Mechanical Engineering. A combat infantry veteran of World War II, a charter member
of the Battle of Normandy, and a member of the Military Order of the Ardennes, Jim was a highly
decorated veteran, having been awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
As a young man, Jim enjoyed scuba diving and was also an avid tennis player, winning many
singles tournaments, and doubles competitions, partnering with his beloved wife, Mollie, the
mother of his three children, Adele, Jean, and James III. Jim retired from the Actuarial
Department of Jefferson Pilot Corporation. He had a huge record collection and never tired of
listening to the big band music of his youth. He was also a member of the United States Tennis
Association, the Patriot Society, and the Cousteau Society.
After Mollie’s death in 1995, UNCG, particularly the School of Music, filled the empty hours and
attracted Jim’s attention. For the last eleven years of his life, Jim became an enthusiastic
advocate and supporter of the marvelous work being done and the talented students at the
UNCG School of Music. He had a special affection for the international students majoring in
music, welcoming them into his home, attending their recitals, and offering them grandfatherly
assistance and support. He continued to receive visits, letters, and phone calls from many of
these young people long after they graduated and left campus.
Jim was especially proud of the two endowments established at the School of Music in his honor:
The William F. Black Jazz Studies Scholarship Endowment and the James L. Roueché and
Willard S. “Boots” Smith Music Endowment for International Students. Until ill health made it too
difficult, Jim faithfully attended every musical program on the School of Music calendar and was
named an honorary member of the faculty in 2001. He died peacefully at home on Tuesday,
March 20, 2007. Tonight’s concert is dedicated in his memory.

The John Scofield Trio
Born in Ohio and raised in suburban Connecticut, John Scofield
took up the guitar at age 11, inspired by both rock and blues
players. A local teacher introduced him to Wes Montgomery, Jim
Hall and Pat Martino, which sparked a lifelong love of jazz.
Scofield soon attended the Berklee College of Music, later moving
into the public eye with a wide variety of bandleaders and
musicians. In 1982, he began a three-and-a-half-year stint touring
with Miles Davis. Scofield’s compositions and inimitable guitar
work appear on three of Davis’ albums. Scofield began recording
as a leader in the late 1970s, establishing himself as an influential
and innovative player and composer.
Steve Swallow studied piano and trumpet before turning to the
double bass at age 14. While attending a prep school, he began
trying his hand in jazz improvisation. In 1960 he left Yale, where
he was studying composition, and settled in New York City. In the
early1970s, Swallow was among the first jazz bassists to switch
exclusively to guitar. He plays with a pick and his style involves
intricate solos in the upper register; he was one of the early
adopters of the high C string on a bass guitar. Swallow taught at
the Berklee College of Music from 1974-1976, and it is often
speculated that he had an influence on the contents of The Real
Book, a semi-underground series transcribed and collated by
students at Berklee during the1970's. Swallow has consistently
won the electric bass category in Down Beat yearly polls, both
Critics' and Readers’, since the mid-80s. His compositions have
been covered by, among others, Jim Hall, Bill Evans, Chick
Corea, Stan Getz and Gary Burton.
Bill Stewart, jazz drummer, is a versatile player who has
performed with a broad array of musicians, from Maceo Parker to
Jim Hall. He is also an active composer, whose distinctive tunes,
which might be categorized as "postmodern" jazz tunes, appear
on his, and others', records.
Steve Haines is currently the Director of the Miles Davis
Program in Jazz Studies at the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro. He has performed was players such as Dick Oatts,
Adam Nussbaum, Bob Berg, Joe Williams, Mark Levine, Richard
Stolzman, Bruce Forman, Ellis Marsalis, Jim Snidero, and
Marcus Roberts; and has supported clinicians such as Tim
Hagans, Fred Hersch, Mulgrew Miller, Lou Marini, Jim McNeely,
Mike Stern, and Kenny Garrett. Performance venues include the
Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, the Molde Jazz Festival in Norway,
the Ethno Jazz Festival in Moldova, the Odessa International
Jazz Carnival in Ukraine, and the Kennedy Center in
Washington, D.C. With the UNCG Jazz Faculty Trio, Steve
served as an ambassador to the state of North Carolina by
performing for heads of state at the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau,
Moldova. Haines holds a B.M. in Jazz Performance from St.
Francis Xavier University in Canada and a M.M. in Music (Jazz Studies) from the University of
North Texas. While at the University of North Texas, Haines directed the Three O'clock Lab
Band, and was a member of the One O'clock Lab Band, with whom he traveled internationally.
Haines' music for large jazz ensembles is published at the University of Northern Colorado Press
and has been broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Cooperation's national radio shows Jazz
Beat and All the Best. Most recently, Steve orchestrated and arranged the musical Ella: The Life
and Music of Ella Fitzgerald.
The UNCG Jazz Ensemble is the flagship of the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program. It was
founded in 1967 and has been featured in concerts throughout the United States, on radio, and
television. The ensemble performs UNCG student arrangements and compositions, as well as
published charts. Jazz performers who have performed with the UNCG Jazz Ensemble include
Clark Terry, Marian McPartland, Chris Murrell, Eddie Daniels, Marvin Stamm, Billy Taylor, and
Jim Snidero. The ensemble performed at the Count Basie Jazz Festival in Carnegie Hall in 1991,
marking the first time a university music ensemble from North Carolina performed in Carnegie
Hall. This past spring, the UNCG Ensemble released its eighth album, Tribute to Miles Davis.
The UNCG Jazz Ensemble traveled to New York City and performed to a sold out house at
Dizzy's Jazz Club at Lincoln Center. The last two albums have garnered the Herb Wong Blue
Chip Award for "top 10 best college campus recording" of 2005, and 2006.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Miles Davis Program in
Jazz Studies offers the student a variety of opportunities to perform and study jazz. Recent
clinicians include Marcus Roberts, Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny
Garrett, Christian McBride, David Friesen, Byron Stripling, and Branford Marsalis. Two large jazz
ensembles, several small jazz combos and supportive courses in jazz theory, jazz ear training,
jazz improvisation, jazz arranging & composition, jazz history, jazz appreciation, jazz pedagogy,
and jazz piano skills provide ample room for growth and lead to the Bachelor of Music in Jazz
Studies. For information, contact Chad Eby, at ceeby@uncg.edu.
