The UNCG Honors High School Jazz Band is comprised of the best high school jazz
students in the state. They have each won their respective chairs by way of audition. This
year was extremely competitive. Numerous tapes and compact discs were sent in to fill
sixteen openings. Their first rehearsal took place yesterday.
The Honors Jazz Band is sponsored by Kindermusik Inc., Downbeat magazine, Jamey
Aebersold Inc., and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Music. The
band would like to take this opportunity to thank their band directors for supporting them
and this important art form.
Tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm is one of the bright young players on the jazz scene. After
growing up in Racine, Wisconsin and West Hartford, Connecticut, he now lives in New York
City, appearing on the club circuit at popular jazz spots such as the Blue Note, Birdland and
Jazz Standard. He has played alongside top young musicians including Bill Charlap, Matt
Wilson and Ben Allison and has shared the stage with veterans such as Dewey Redman,
Fred Hersch and the late Betty Carter. As a regular in singer Jane Monheit's band for three
years, he caught the attention of critics with his big tenor sound. Downbeat Magazine's
2004 critics' poll named him a rising star.
Steve Haines directs the Miles Davis Program in Jazz Studies at the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro. He has performed with players such as Dick Oatts, Adam
Nussbaum, Bob Berg, Joe Williams, Mark Levine, Richard Stolzman, Jason and Ellis
Marsalis, Jim Snidero, and Marcus Roberts. His first album as a leader The Steve Haines
Quintet: Beginner's Mind received international critical acclaim and was hailed by All About
Jazz as "one of the best inside/outside records of the year." His newest album,
Stickadiboom, features drummer Jimmy Cobb. Haines holds a B.M. in Jazz Performance
from St. Francis Xavier University in Canada and a M.M. in Music (Jazz Studies) from the
University of North Texas, where he was a member of the UNT One O’clock Lab Band.
Haines' music is published at the University of Northern Colorado Press and has been
broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Cooperation's national radio shows Jazz Beat
and All the Best. Steve orchestrated and arranged the musical Ella: The Life and Music of
Ella Fitzgerald. He has recently returned from living in New York City on research
assignment.
The UNCG Jazz Ensemble is the flagship of the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program. It was
founded in 1967 and has been featured in concerts throughout the United States, on radio,
and television. The ensemble is comprised of jazz studies majors and undergraduate and
graduate students whom are making jazz a part of their musical training. Musicians who
have performed with the UNCG Jazz Ensemble include Clark Terry, Marian McPartland,
Chris Murrell, Eddie Daniels, Joe Henson, Marvin Stamm, Billy Taylor, Dick Oatts, Ed
Neumeister, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Byron Stripling. The Jazz Ensemble played at the
Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage and Lincoln Center in New York City.
Every year, the jazz ensemble produces a compact disc, which feature both published
music, and music written by UNCG students. Students are encouraged to write
arrangements of jazz standards, as well as original compositions and orchestrations.
These recordings have received 5 star reviews and are commonly heard on NPR radio.
The compact discs released commercially to date are Collaboration, One Finger Snap,
Stronger than Dirt, Back to Basie, Honestly, Vision, Live with Dewey Redman, and Tribute
to Miles Davis. The last three recordings earned the Herb Wong Blue Chip Award in Jazz
Education Journal, having made the top 10 "best jazz college recordings."
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Miles Davis Program in Jazz Studies
offers the student a variety of opportunities to perform and study jazz. Recent clinicians
include Marcus Roberts, Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny
Garrett, Christian McBride, David Friesen, and Byron Stripling. Two large jazz ensembles,
several small jazz combos and supportive courses in jazz theory, jazz ear training, jazz
improvisation, jazz arranging & composition, jazz history, jazz appreciation, jazz pedagogy,
and jazz piano skills provide ample room for growth and lead to the Bachelor of Music in
Jazz Studies.
