Heinrich Schütz:
Cantate Domino
Heinrich Schütz was a prolific German composer in the 17th century, based in Dresden. He set
mainly biblical texts, largely in German, unlike this piece. This motet is found in the “Ersten
Musicalischen Lustgärtlein” composed in 1628. It was originally written for soprano, alto, and
baritone; this edition has been pitched higher for women’s voices. In this setting, Schütz uses a
variety of textures to create obvious contrasts for each line of the text.
Cantate Domino
Psalm 98:1
Cantate Domino
Canticum novum,
Quia mirabilia fecit,
Salvavit
Dextera sua,
Et bracchio sancto suo.
Sing to the Lord
Sing to the Lord
A new song,
He has done marvelous things,
He has worked salvation
With his right hand,
And his holy arm.
Robert Lowry:
How Can I Keep from Singing?
Text: Robert Lowry (1826-1899), 3rd and 4th stanzas by James & Ina Heup
Often misattributed as a traditional Quaker hymn, the first two verses of this piece were written by
Robert Lowry, an American Baptist pastor who also worked as a music editor at the Bigelow
Publishing Company. The text of those two verses appears here in a traditional adaptation of the
original text, with fewer specific religious references and a more general tone. In 1999, James
Mulholland was commissioned by the Young Naperville Singers of Illinois, in celebration of their
15th year. Ina Heup, then their Artistic Director, wrote the final two stanzas with her husband,
James.
Gabriel Fauré:
Tantum ergo, Op. 65, No. 2
Text: Thomas Aquinas (1227-1274)
Fauré was sent to the Niedermeyer school of religious music in Paris at the age of nine, where
the goal was to train new organists and choirmasters in traditional sacred music composition, a
reaction to the simplified church music which prevailed following the French Revolution. This
piece, written late in Fauré’s life, reflects this early training in the very traditional Latin text, the
flowing melodic lines, the double choir effect of the soloists against the chorus and in the quiet,
reverent tone. Romantic elements are found in the harmonic language and expressive nuances,
creating a beautiful, reverent prayer.
Tantum ergo
Text by Thomas Acquinas (1227-1274)
ed. E. Harold Geer
Tantum ergo Sacramentum
Veneremur cernui:
Et antiquum documentum
Novo cedat ritui:
Praestet fides supplementum
Sensuum defectui.
Genitori, Genitoque
Laus et iubilatio,
So Great Therefore
So great therefore the sacrament,
In homage we bend low:
And the old instruction
To the new yields the ritual:
Keep faith supplying
For the senses fail.
To the everlasting Father and the Son
Praise and jubilation,
Salus, honor, virtus quoque
Sit et benedictio:
Procedenti ab utroque
Compar sit laudation.
Amen.
Health, honor, and power also
To be and blessings
Proceed from both,
Equal to be praised.
Amen.
English Folk Song:
The Turtle Dove
The turtle dove, forming life-long bonds with one mate, has long been an emblem of love. An
English folk song dating back to the eighteenth century, The Turtle Dove tells the story of two
lovers who have been separated – ultimately by death. Schram has published well over 1,300
works, but her arrangement of The Turtle Dove remains a favorite for women’s voices. This
arrangement combines beauty and sensitivity along with warm harmonies and elegant but
simplistic melodic lines to create a powerful statement of love and love lost.
James Quitman Mulholland:
Diary of Dickinson
Text: Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)
Diary of Dickinson was commissioned for the 1997 Children in Harmony Festival, and features
four poems by Emily Dickinson. Mulholland sets the opening and closing poems to the same
music although they are largely unrelated: both were written in 1955 and appear in the same
volume of Dickinson poetry, but over a hundred poems were written between these two. The two
middle poems were written much later and much earlier in Dickinson’s life, respectively. Both are
set to complex musical rhythms: “They might not need me” reflects the word stresses of the text,
while “I’m nobody” brings out the meaning, rather than the syllabic stresses, of the text.
Gabriel Fauré:
Cantique de Jean Racine
Verbégal au Trés Haut
Notreunique espérance
Jour eternel de la terre et des cieux,
De la paisible nuit
Nous rompons le silence.
Divin Sauveur
jette sur nous les yeux!
Repands sur nous
le feu de ta grace puisante,
que tout l’enfer
fuie au son de ta voix,
Dissipe le sommeil,
d’une âme languisante
qui la conduit
a l’oubli de tes lois!
O Christ, sois favorable
à ce peuple fidèle
pour te bénir
maintenant rassemble,
Reçois les chants qu’il offer,
à ta gloire immortelle
et de tes dons
qu’il retourne comblé!
Word of God from on high,
Our hope and expectation,
The eternal radiance of heaven and the earth.
Before thy peaceful throne
We call to Thee for mercy.
Dear Savior
Guard us with thy watchful eye!
Pour down on us
The flames of thy grace, strong and mighty,
The powers of death
Fell at thy sounding voice.
Our slumbering souls awake,
In languish long repining
That we may walk
In the light of thy law!
O Christ, grant us thy favor
Thy flock true and faithful
Who gather here
To adore thy great name.
Attend the praise we offer,
Thy glory everlasting
Receive our gifts
We return to thy hand!
Franz Schubert:
Die Nacht, Op. 17 no. 4
Wie schön bist du,
freundliche Stille,
Himmlische Ruh’!
Sehet, wie di klaren Sterne
wandeln in des Himmels Auen
und auf herniederschauen,
scheigend aus der blauen Ferne
Wie schön bist du,
freundliche Stille,
Himmlische Ruh’!
Schweigend nacht des Lenzes Milde
sich der Erde weichem Schoos,
kränzt den Silberquell mit Moos
How beautiful you are,
friendly stillness,
heavenly rest!
See how clear stars
change in the sky’s meadows
never looking back,
silent in the blue distance
How beautiful you are,
friendly stillness,
heavenly rest!
Silent blends the spring mildness
with the Earth’s soft lap,
crowning the silver springs with moss
Joseph Rheinberger:
Wie lieblich sind Deine Wohnungen
Josef Rheinburger (1839-1901) was born in Liechtenstein but spent most of his career in Munich,
Germany as a composer, organist, conductor and teacher. He was a prolific composer of operas,
symphonies, chamber music, and choral works but is primarily for his organ works. His “Wie
lieblich sind Deine Wohnungen” is set for four-part women’s chorus and harp and takes its text
from Psalm 84.
Eva Ugalde was born in 1973 in San Sebastian, Spain. She has written several pieces for
women’s voices and is a member of Kanta Cantemus Coroa, a women’s choir conducted by
Javier Busto. “Miserere” is an a cappella work dedicated to victims of war.
Ira Randall Thompson was born in New York on April 21, 1899. He received his education from
Harvard University and held positions at many educational institutions including the University of
California at Berkley, Curtis Institute of Music, the University of Virginia at Charlottesville,
Princeton University, and Harvard University. “God’s Bottles” is from a larger work entitled
Americana. The text for this piece comes from a leaflet put out during the prohibition era by the
National Women’s Christian Temperance Union to educate young people about the harms of
drinking alcohol.
Michael Cleveland was born in 1937 and is a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno
where he directs the Women's Chorus. The text for his composition “Come to Me” is taken from
Christina Rossetti’s poem “Echo.” Rosetti (1830-1894) was an English poet who wrote a variety of
romantic, devotional, and children's poems.
Jackson Berkey is a nationally known pianist and recording artist. He is the featured keyboardist
on the Mannheim Steamroller Fresh Aire and platinum Christmas recordings. He is also an
ASCAP award-winning composer whose works have been performed and recorded by
professional choral ensembles such as The Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Mormon
Tabernacle Choir. His “Sacramento Sis Joe” was originally written for mixed chorus, piano, and
percussion. In 1998, the Detroit Concert Choir commissioned this a cappella four-part treble
arrangement of the work.
Wie lieblich sind Deine Wohnungen
Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen, O Herr!
es sehnt sich meine Seele
nach dem Vorhof des Herrn.
Mein Herz frohlockt in dem lebendigen Gotte.
How lovely are your dwellings
How lovely are thy dwellings, O Lord!
My soul longs,
yea, faints for the courts of the Lord.
My heart exults in the living God.
Denn der Sperling findet sein Haus,
Und die Taube Obdach in Sturm,
ich finde deine Altäre,
O du mein König, Herr und Gott!
Selig, selig, selig sind,
die in deinem Hause wohnen,
in alle Ewigkeit loben sie dich!
Barmherzigkeit und wahrheit liebt Gott,
und denen, die da wandeln in Unschuld,
gibt Gnade er, gibt Gnade und Herrlichkeit!
Eva Ugalde:
Miserere
Miserere mihi, Domine,
quoniam ad te clamavi tota die;
quia tu, Domine, suavis ac mitis es,
et copiosus in misericordia
omnibus invocantibus te.
Inclina, Domine, aurem tuam mihi,
et exaudi me;
quoniam inops, et pauper sum ego.
Amen.
For the sparrow finds her house,
And the dove a shelter from the storm,
I find your alter,
O you, my king, Lord, and God!
Holy, holy, holy are
They that make your house their dwelling,
In all eternity praising you!
Yea! Mercy and truth loves our God,
And unto souls walking in purity,
Gives us grace, gives grace and glory!
Miserere
Have mercy on me, O Lord,
for I have cried to Thee all the day;
for Thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild,
and plenteous in mercy
to all that call upon Thee.
Incline Thine ear to me, O Lord,
and hear me;
for I am needy and poor.
Amen.
