A Brief Note About the Soloists in the Gloria a otto voce
and Musikalische Exequien
Monteverdi sectionalizes each line of the text in the Gloria by alternating capella sections
with vocal combinations of duets and trios. He does not make each line of text a discreet
movement but, instead, maintains the cohesion of the work with short phrases for each line
and cadences indicating the conclusion of the line. The singers listed below are the soli
singers in this work.

As seen in the program and in the translation that follows, a primary constructive and
expressive element in Part I of the Exequien is the alternation of soli voices with the capella.
The text for the soli voices comes from various biblical verses and make up discreet
sections or movements. The capella text is a response to these verses taken from the Burial
Mass, and religious writers and thinkers of the sixteenth century such as Martin Luther,
Ludwig Helmbold, Johann Leon, Johannes Gigas, and Nikolaus Herman. In addition, there
is a three-part soli group – two seraphim and the beata anima soloists responding to the
capella in Part III. Instructions left for Part III implies that there may be multiples of this
three-part soli group in different locations. In this performance I am utilizing two groups
stationed in the opposing balconies. For ease of presentation, the table below lists the
soloists and the corresponding number from Part I in which they sing. The three-part soli
of Part III appear below that table. WEY
