Audrey
Knyrim
Mattern
was
born
in
Hazelton
,
Pennsylvania
, on
20
November
1919
, the
oldest
of
six
children
. Her
father
was a
machinist
for the
Cranberry
Collier
and a
janitor
and her
mother
was a
homemaker
.
Mattern
graduated
from
Hazel
Senior
High
School
in
1937
and then
held
various
positions
at a
five-and-ten
cent
store
,
weekly
newspaper
,
credit
bureau
, and
jewelry
store.
"
Mattern
enlisted
in the
Marine
Corps
Women's
Reserve
in
March
1943
and
received
orders
in
July
. She
attended
basic
training
at
Camp
Lejeune
in
North
Carolina
and in
September
1943
was
sent
to
Henderson
Hall
in
Arlington
,
Virginia
,
where
she was
stationed
in the
Statistical
Department
of the
Quartermaster
Department
. She
remained
there
until
her
discharge
on
6
October
1945.
"
Mattern
returned
to her
job
at the
jewelry
store
in
Hazelton
in the
fall
of
1945
. In
1948
she
moved
to
Denver
,
Colorado
, and
spent
three
years
working
in the
offices
of
Montgomery
Ward
. She
married
Dick
Mattern
in
January
1949
.
Audrey
Mattern
passed
away
in
2004
.
