Women's
Army
Corps
(WAC)
from
1943
to
1948
and then
taught
school
at
overseas
bases
for the
Department
of
Defense
for
seventeen
years
.
Nina
M
.
Greenlee
was
born
in
Old
Fort
,
North
Carolina
, and
attended
Marion
High
School
. She
graduated
from the
Woman's
College
of the
University
of
North
Carolina
(now
the
University
of
North
Carolina
at
Greensboro)
in
1930
with an
English
degree
.
After
graduation
, she
taught
English
and
history
in
McDowell
County
,
North
Carolina
.
Greenlee
joined
the
Women's
Army
Corps
(WAC)
in
June
1943
. She
went
through
basic
training
at
Fort
Oglethorpe
,
Georgia
.
After
training
she was
sent
to
Sul
Ross
State
College
in
Alpine
,
Texas
, for
administration
school
. She was then
assigned
to
Camp
Davis
,
North
Carolina
, and then
Fort
Bragg
. In
both
places
she
worked
in the
finance
office
. In
1946
she was
transferred
to
Caserta
,
Italy
, for
six
months
and then to
Leghorn
,
Italy
, for
six
months
. She was
transferred
to
Fort
Jay
,
New
York
, and
discharged
in
1948.

After
the
war
,
Greenlee
worked
for a
year
as a
teacher
and then
moved
to
Charlotte
,
North
Carolina
, and
worked
as a
secretary
for a
farming
equipment
company
. For the
next
seventeen
years
, she
served
as an
elementary
teacher
at
American
military
bases
in the
Azores
Islands
,
England
, and
Spain
, for
Department
of
Defense
schools
.
Nina
Greenlee
passed
away
in
January
2004
.
