Helen Bolling Potts (1919-2012) of High Point, North Carolina, served overseas with the American Red Cross during World War II .
Helen Bolling Potts was born in 1919 in High Point, North Carolina. She attended Woman’s College and graduated with a degree in physical education in 1939. Potts taught for two years in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, worked on a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Potts joined the Red Cross in December of 1942. She was assigned to the 23rd Street YMCA in New York City, where she accompanied French sailors on tours of the city. In 1943 she was sent overseas to work as a "doughnut girl" in England, France, and Germany .
After leaving the Red Cross, Potts settled in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where she worked with the Girls Scouts of America. She died on 18 June, 2012. |
