. She
grew

in
Liberty

North
Carolina
, and
graduated
from
Liberty
High
School
in
1935
. She
went
to
Emergency
Hospital
and
Catholic
University
in
Washington
,
D.C.
, and
Johns
Hopkins
Hospital
in
Baltimore
,
Maryland
, for
three
years
of
nursing
school
.
Twiddy
worked
for
one
year
in a
Washington
hospital
, then
spent
several
years
in
private
duty
nursing
. In
1941
, she
moved
to
San
Francisco
,
California
, and
worked
at
Stanford
Hospital
.
Twiddy
joined
the
Army
Nurse
Corps
as a
second
lieutenant
, and in
February
1942
, she was
sent
to
Fort
Ord
,
California
,
where
she
worked
in the
skin
ward
. She
married
Charles
Twiddy
, an
army
warrant
officer
, in
April
1943
and was
discharged
from the
Army
Nurse
Corps
that
fall
,
after
becoming
pregnant
.
The
Twiddys
lived
in
California
until
1945
,
when
they
settled
in
Raleigh
,
North
Carolina
.
Charles
went
back
into the
army
a
few
years
later
, and the
family
moved
to
Texas
,
Hawaii
, and
Maryland
.
Around
1950
, he
took
a
civilian
job
at the
Pentagon
, and
Rachel
occasionally
worked
as a
nurse
while
they
lived
in
Washington
,
D.C
. The
Twiddys
moved
back
to
Liberty
in
1984
.
Rachel
Brower
Twiddy
died
on
19
February
,
2010
.
