. Her
father
worked
for the
Civilian
Conservation
Corps
, and the
family
moved
frequently
.
Phillips
graduated
from the
high
school
department
of
Pinelands
College
in
Salemburg
,
North
Carolina
. She
attended
the
Woman’s
College
of the
University
of
North
Carolina
in
Greensboro
(now
the
University
of
North
Carolina
at
Greensboro)
in
1948
for
one
year.
" In
February
1949
,
Phillips
joined
the
Women’s
Army
Corps
(WAC)
. She
went
to
Camp
Lee
,
Virginia
, with the
purpose
of
going
to
Officer
Candidate
School
, but
washed
out
after
four
months
and
took
a
job
as a
platoon
sergeant
of a
clerk
typist
school
. On
18
February
1950
, she
married
Jack
Phillips
, and she
left
the
service
one
month
later
. The
couple
lived
in
Boston
,
Massachusetts
, and
Florida
,
before
returning
to
North
Carolina
in
1979
.
Phillips
had
five
children
.
