Veteran's biography |
Alice Starr May was born on 21 July, 1926 and raised in White Bluff, Arkansas. In May of 1943, at the age of seventeen, May decided to join the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, which became the Women's Army Corps on July 1, 1943. She attended basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia .
May was then assigned to Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado to be trained in photography. Her next assignment was Eglin Field, Florida to learn about dark room photography and how to be a film projectionist. She was assigned to the projection room where she assisted in showing military test films to high ranking military officials, including General George S. Patton .
While at Eglin, May met her future husband James in the Officers' Club. They married, and six months later May became pregnant with her first child and she had to leave the military. Although she was no longer enlisted, May's husband remained in the army and they lived in numerous places during his military career, including Germany, Puerto Rico, and Spain. May currently resides in Lexington, North Carolina. |
