Object narrative
Robert Taber (1865-1904) was born in Staten Island , NY and became an actor most noted for his rocky marriage to actress Julia Marlowe . He received his education at Princeton and entered into the acting profession in 1886 , playing Silvius in As You Like It in Helena Modjeska's company . Modjeska engaged him for her entire season , and in following years he continued to act in the companies of other well-known stars , including Richard Mansfield , Mrs . John Drew , Augustin Daly , and finally Miss Marlowe . The role he was most noted for was Macduff in Shakespeare's Macbeth . Taber and Marlowe were married in 1894 . According to many who knew her, Marlowe sacrificed her own self-interests many times in order to promote Taber's career . Despite this, however , professional jealousy ended their marriage in 1900 . Taber was touring in England at the time of their divorce . This letter was written by Taber on April 2 , 1895 to a Mrs . Valera during the time he and Marlowe were married . It reads : April 2nd '95 Mrs . Mariba S . Valera Dear Madame . I herewith return your play . Mrs . Taber is grateful for your kindness in submitting it and notwithstanding its interest - She finds it unsuited for her present use . Very truly yours , Robert Taber
