Minnie
Hauk
(1851-1929)
was a
famous
American
opera
singer
(soprano/mezzo-soprano)
from
1866-1890s
,
making
her
stage
debut
in
Brooklyn
at
age
fourteen
in the
role
of
Amina
in '
La
Sonnambula
. She
followed
with her
debut
in
New
York
City
and by
1867
sang
Juliette
in the
American
premiere
of
Gounod'
;
s
'
Romeo
et
Juliette
. She was the
first
American
to
sing
the
role
of
Carmen
in
1878
and
Manon
in
1885
. She
sang
Carmen
in
four
languages
and
toured
Europe
extensively
. She
died
in
Switzerland
in
1929
,
ten
years
after
appealing
to her
fellow
Americans
in the
New
York
Times
to
rescue
her from
destitution
after
her
husband
,
Baron
Ernest
von
Hesse-Wartegg
left
her with
enormous
debts
upon
his
death
. In this
note
Jefferson
is
sending
her his
autograph
, but
is
sorry
that he has
no
picture
to
send
as
well
.
It
can
be
implied
she
asked
for
both
. The
relationship
between
the
correspondents
is
unclear
.
It
can
be
dated
between
1882-1905
, the
years
of
Jefferson'

life
which
overlap
Hauk'

s
marriage
to
Hesse-Wartegg
. The
