Object narrative
Henry Irving's handwritten note on the official stationery of C.H . & Co. , which owned the Hotel Vendome in Boston and Profile House , White Mts. , New Hampshire . This note was written four days before The Lyceum Company left the United States to return to England after their Fourth American Tour . Irving was just wrapping up the tour in Boston , having the company's last performance of the tour on the date of the letter , and was returning to New York for a few days before departure . On the 15th of March , he had given an address at Harvard on Individuality . The dinner at Delmonico's was a farewell dinner that was in fact attended by Mounet-Sully (a famous French actor) , as well as other New York dignitaries (Brereton 189 , vol . 2) . According to a NY Times article dated March 20 , 1894 , Mounet-Sully arrived in New York via a French liner on March 19th for an engagement at the Abbey Theatre . The text of the letter is as follows : Plaza Hotel New York 17th March 1894 My kind friend Mounet-Sully Greeting & Salutations and love - I have some friends dining with me at Delmonico's on Monday Evening the 19th at half past seven o'clock . I hope with all my heart wish [?] you can come for there are many I would like to know you . Ever yours Henry Irving
