Object narrative |
This Theatre Royal, Drury Lane broadside advertises the evening's entertainment for Monday, Nov. 18, 1833. The bill states that Their Majesties' Servants will perform (by special Desire) Lord Byron's Tragedy of WERNER. In the title role of Werner was William Charles Macready. William Charles Macready (1793-1873) was a popular actor in England at this time, having first appeared in one of his father's theatres in 1810 as Romeo. Macready had first played Werner on December 15, 1830, to much acclaim. His biographer, William Archer, states that: The fact that he was able to breathe life into Byron's dull, diffuse, and ill-written play appears to me, I confess, one of the most convincing proofs that he was really a great actor (82). The season of 1833-1834 was a difficult one for Macready. A new manager by the name of Alfred Bunn had taken charge of Drury Lane and Covent Garden in May of 1833, and while an experienced stage-manager and journalist, he was also known as having little education, no literary culture, a shady private character...[and] a fine stock of ingenuous snobbishness (Ibid. 86). Bunn demanded that Macready play multiple roles with little time off between performances, leading to many bouts with illness for Macready. Between October 5th and October 30th, Archer records that Macready appeared fifteen times in as many as eleven different roles. He undertook Werner on this night while feeling ill, and stated in his diary that he: Acted Werner as well as I could...Made several strong effects by management and taking time the great secret (Toynbee Vol. 1 79). He also stated that his weakness was so apparent that other actors asked Mr. Bunn to not put Macready on the bill the following night. The next day a doctor requested Macready not to play for a few days, a direction which was not followed as the broadside for November 21, 1833 (also in our collection) indicates Macready played Antony in 'Antony & Cleopatra' that night. Also on this broadside are the cast lists for the after pieces 'Inkle and Yarico' and 'My Neighbour's Wife!,' and advertising for 'William Tell' and 'Antony & Cleopatra,' which were scheduled to be performed on Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. However, Macready's illness canceled those plans. 'William Tell' was not performed at all, and 'Antony & Cleopatra' was moved back to Thursday (see item MSS255_B50_008). |
