Item description	Lithograph poster advertising 'The Musketeers' starring Paul Gilmore (1873-1962) as D'artagnan. The poster is estimated to be dated 1899.
Object narrative	Paul Gilmore (1873-1962) was born in Wisconsin in 1873 and began acting in stock companies in Minnesota when he was a teenager. He traveled around for several years playing small roles in such shows as 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' 'In Old Kentucky,' and 'The Charity Ball.' The role of d'Artagnan had long been played by actor Alexander Salvini, and his death generated fears that the role was gone forever; however, Gilmore brought new life to the part. In fact, it became a star vehicle for him as he played the role in New York and in tours around the United States. On Dec. 16, 1899, Gilmore and two other actors were seriously wounded while performing 'The Musketeers' in Phoenix, Arizona. Ball cartridges had mistakenly been placed into a stage pistol instead of blanks, and Gilmore was shot six times. He was not expected to live, much less return to the stage. However, he recovered and a year later returned to acting. In addition to his brush with death, Gilmore had a tragic love life. He divorced his first wife after he caught her 'entertaining' neighborhood men while he was away on tour in 1894, and in 1899 his second wife died two days after giving birth to twins. Living into his 80s, Gilmore eventually became a well known silent film actor and ran a small theatre of his own.
