Object narrative
Paul
Gilmore
(1873-1962)
was
born
in
Wisconsin
in
1873
and
began
acting
in
stock
companies
in
Minnesota
when
he was a
teenager
. He
traveled
around
for
several
years
playing
small
roles
in
such
shows
as '
Uncle
Tom'
;
s
Cabin,'
; ' In
Old
Kentucky,'
; and ' The
Charity
Ball.'
; The
role
of
d'
;
Artagnan
had
long
been
played
by
actor
Alexander
Salvini
, and his
death
generated
fears
that the
role
was
gone
forever
;
however
,
Gilmore
brought
new
life
to the
part
. In
fact
,
it
became
a
star
vehicle
for him as he
played
the
role
in
New
York
and in
tours
around
the
United
States
. On
Dec
.
16
,
1899
,
Gilmore
and
two
other
actors
were
seriously
wounded
while
performing
' The
Musketeers'
; in
Phoenix
,
Arizona
.
Ball
cartridges
had
mistakenly
been
placed
into a
stage
pistol
instead
of
blanks
, and
Gilmore
was
shot
six
times
. He was not
expected
to
live
,
much
less
return
to the
stage
.
However
, he
recovered
and a
year
later
returned
to
acting
. In
addition
to his
brush
with
death
,
Gilmore
had a
tragic
love
life
. He
divorced
his
first
wife
after
he
caught
her '
entertaining'
;
neighborhood
men
while
he was
away
on
tour
in
1894
, and in
1899
his
second
wife
died
two
days
after
giving
birth
to
twins
.
Living
into his
80s
,
Gilmore
eventually
became
a
well
known
silent
film
actor
and
ran
a
small
theatre
of his
own
.
