Lydia E. Pinkham Is Not r t; ) f 5 a Legend She was born at Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1819, the year of Queen Victoria's birth. She chose teaching aE' her profession and in those stirring years preceding the Civil War, her keen mind was actively interested in the topics of the times. She became acquainted with John G. Whittier, James R. Lowell, and William L. Garrison, all of whom lived in eastern Massachusetts, not far from Lynn. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound was first made on her kitchen stove for her family and neighbors. With true womanly sympathy, she gave it freely and gladly to all who asked. After the panic of 1873, when Mr. Pinkham's health failed and the family finances were at low ebb, Mrs. Pinkham and her children began to market her popular herb medicine. It was hard work with so little capital but Mrs. Pinkham lived to see the growing business on a firm foundation. Lydia E. Pinkham was the mother of four sons and a daughter. The oldest son served his country in the Civil War, the second in the Legislature. Her daughter, the only surviving child, is now Treasurer of the Pinkham Medicine Company. Her grandchildren are Directors in the same company which always has been owned and controlled by her family. There are hundreds of people who remember Lydia E. Pinkham as a kindly neighbor and friend. Her descendants are today among the respected and influential citizens of Lynn and Salem. ANCIENT LEGENDS Ancient Greece! Land of sunny skies and vine-clad hills,. land of nymph-like maidens and god-like youths, land ali gleaming marble temples and perfect sculptures whieh no man can equal. The ancient Greeks loved the great out-flung world ok Nature and peopled it with their many deities to whom they attributed all the human emotions--love, hatred, fidelity~ envy, jealousy,. trickery and the like. Among them were Jupiter, father of gods and men; Juno, his wife; Mars the 'Var god; Venus, goddess of Love, and her little son, Cupida Apollo, the Sw1-god and his sister Diana, the Moon goddess~ Mercury, the Athlete; Minerva, the Wise; Neptune, ruler of the Ocean; and Pluto, ruler of the Realm of the Dead. Although they lived on Mt. Olympus above the clouds feasting on nectar and ambrosia, they often walked and talk;) among men. Their road through the sky .was called The Milky Way and their starry palaces on either side of it may still" be seen. Just as the children ask, the ancients asked themselves, "Why is it cold in winteri Who makes the flowers? Why are< some people black'! Where does the Sun go at night?" To; answer their many questions they told charming, fanciful tales of the doings of their gods in the long ago, stories thatl were handed down until they became the legends we delight to read. We admire and appreciate the sculpture of the Greeks~ their physical beauty and strength, their ideals and theil' picturesque simplicity. But we must -remember that culture in the early centuries was for the few. Never in the history of' the world have the common people enjoyed the opportunities and -privileges of education, travel and religion, the un dreamed-of luxuries of home, as they do today. So while we dream of "the glory that was Greece", let us be glad that you and I are living in these United States, in the Year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and twenty-six. :a ECHO AND NARCISSUS 1 l 1 Along the banks of 21 '1-!j ll 1 ~~ a. quiet and ben.u~iful ;') /'% \ f ~, 1, 1' nver there once hved J':i l' £1/ j I aE clohvoe. lSy hney wmapsh a ns atmalekd- ~ 1\ ~\ ' tsZ' /J'I ative as she was beau- tiful, but when there l . ~~ \,. ~ was no one to talk to ~ 1l she sat for hours on l 1\ the rocks beneath the Jl trees or on the river I banks dabbling her ~ dainty feet in the ~ limpid water and was very happy. MOLASSES Remember Grandma and her ever-ready spoon? If· you ever dodged a dose it wasn't her fault, for she was convinced that in the Spring we all need a tonic. We do. Grandma was right. But now-a-days we don't take as much sulphur and molasses. We take a pleasant, carefully prepared medicine such as Lydia E. Pinkham's Herb Medicine. It helps to rid the system of accumulated impurities and to tone up the whole body. And it is made from the good ?ld-fashioned herbs and roots that Grandma delighted in. "HER SKIN SOON CLEARED" "When rriy oldest daughter was 13 years old her face broke out all over with pimples. I was told what a wonderful medicine Lydia E. Pinkham's Herb Medicine was, so I gave her four bottles of it, then a couple of weeks after that was gone she took two more. FRATER, . lo6 Allison Street, San Francisco, California "MY FACE STARTED TO BREAK OUT" "I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound for weakness, dizzy spells and headache, also for the awful pains I always got every month. I had to go to bed and keep warm for the first day. My worst trouble was after my first childbirth. I got so poor that my face started to break out with pimples and ugly spots. These never went away until after I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Herb Medicine with the Vegetable Compound. I had such a weak back at times that I could hardly lift my baby out of its bed. Lots of times I had to leave my work and take a rest or lie down until my dizzy spell was over. My sister-in-law, Mrs. Lebsack, told me about your medicine and I started to take it. I am feeling fine, my backache is gone and I can eat and sleep good now, which I could not do beforfr. I am entirely willing to answer any question women may ask me about the Vegetable Compound which has helped me so much. · MRS. PETER FRITCHEL, R. No. 1, Box 47, Loveland, Colorado a ECHO AND NARCISSUS With rapture- he caught at the beautiful vision but the moment he touched the water it vanished. He lay for some moments waiting 'til the water became calm when he again looked into its depths for the lovely face. Yes, there it was once more looking up at him with longing eyes. This time he bent slowly over the water and spoke gently to her. As he did so the beautiful face also came closer and the rosy lips seemed to speak to him. When he stopped speaking that he might bear what the lovely lips were saying, the vision also stopped speaking. In vain he again sought to clasp her in his arms but she only vanished as before. Again and again he wflited and watched the lovely nymph in the water and when night came and the moon shone soft.ly over the earth he sat by the pool gazing longingly at a pair of eyes which returned that same sad sweet expression and Narcissus, not kno;ving that it was his own reflection, believed t.hat the lovely nymph was as unhappy as he. So hu lingered there, day after day, and as time wore on .and he ate no food he at last wasted away and died. At seeing the handsome youth cold in death the gods were moved to pity. They .changed him into a pale lovely flower which to this day grows near the water's edge, and called it "Narcissus" in memory of the handsome youth. SINCE NARCISSUS LOVED ECHO men have always been attracted by a beautiful face. Women l.n every age have found it wise to make the most of their feminine charm. Men like a youthful woman. Nothing makes ~ woman old before her time like illness, particularly the nagging, recurrent illnesses common to her sex. Keep young-looking. Keep active. Keep your "pep." "I HAVE TO SIT DOWN ALL DAY" "I am now taking your medicine for the third time and it has helped me every time. I work for the Victory Sparlder and Specialty Company where they make fire-works for the Fourth of July and I have to sit down all day long. For nearly two years my right side hurt me, under 'my ribs. The doctor ad~ vised an operation. I have taken Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and I feel fine. My nerves are better and I am gaining in weight. My husband decided for me to take the medicine again and he said he saw a difference in me after I took the first bottle. Do you? . s CLYTm, THE SUNFLOWER MAIDEN ( A beautiful story has been handed q,rro., ,,.,...._. ... ~ down through the ages, of Cl~ie, a ::\"1 · lovely damsel who was changed mto a sun-flower. Every morning the goddess of dawn opened with her rosy fingers ~ the great eastern gate and the sun-god rode out in his bright chariot to start on his journey across the sky, and to be welcomed by all growing things on the earth and by the birds in the woods who poured forth their praise in song. But Clytie, an earthly maiden, only stood and watched him the whole day through. Long before he first appeared in the morning she was waiting to see him ride up into the heavens and travel westward. In the evening when he jl--- reached the western sea and his boat ~,,:S::) ~hr~"'£,, awaited him to carry him back to his gleaming castle in the east, Clytie still stood and gazed fervently after the flaming vehicle until it was swallowed up in the darkness of night. Then turning her face to the east she watched again for his corning. Day by day this fair young maid with golden hair and dark eyes followed wistfully with sweet upturned face the sun-god driving his brilliant car across the firmament, looking intently after him with eyes of adoration, and yearning for his lov~ and caresses. But the sun-god drove swiftly and though nothing escaped his bright, all-seeing eye, he paid no attention to the sad-faced maiden who longed for his affection. The days came and went but still the sun-god passed her without seeming to notice her and at last she drooped and saddened and began to pine away. Then the gods in symprtthy changed her to a sunflower. Constant in her love for the glorious young god, the heart of Clytie remained unchanged. She still adored and truly loved the youthful god in the blazing chariot and to this day she watches with uplifted face as the bright sun wends its way across the meadow of the sky. 6 ' PLAY WITH YOUR CmLDREN Enjoy them. Grow young yourself. Childhood is such a fleeting thing. Don't lose one precious hour of it. Let them have happy memories. You don't want your children to say, "Mother never played with us. She didn't seem to want to have a good time." If healthy, active, friendly children get on your nerves so you could scream at them, don't blame the children. The fault may be in yourself. You may need Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. "I HAVE NO PATIENCE WITH THEM" "I was weak, nervous and run-down before my last baby was born and my other children tired me. I had no patience with them and they made me feel tired all the time. My mother told me· about some one she used to know who took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and it helped her, ~o I took it and got fine results. I had a whole lot easier time at birth this time and have got along fine since, thanks to the Vegetable Compound. My husband and I both feel certain that it helped me." MRS. RAYMOND STAGE, R.F.D. No. 32, Dalton, Pennsylvania "A SPLENDID TONIC" . "I consider Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound a splendid tonic for women. After my third child was born I was in a mighty weak and nervous condition. I would have dizzy spells and terrible pains in my head. My back would ache so badly that I could hardly stand it. One of my friends advised me to take the Vegetable Compound as it had helped her so much. So my husband got me a bottle and I began taking it. By the time I had taken half of the bottle I was feeling like a new person as it brought back my appetite. Lydia E. Pinkham's Pills for Constipation relieved me of a bad case of constipation and sick headache and I have recommended them to lots of my friends." MRS. DAISY BELL REED, R. Apollo, the glorious I god who drove the sun chariot, lived in a beautiful sunny land with his mother who ~ was justly proud of her dark-eyed golden· haired boy. She often told him of his radiant and powerful father and every morning, to· gether, they watched the sun god start out on his journey across the sh.7. Phaeton soon became co conceited be· cause of his relation to the sun god and bragged so continu· ously about it that his companions told him \ to prove it or else ,_ __ __.~....,...-~=--------'never speak of it again. Accordingly he decided to pay his immortal father a visit and thus bring out the facts to make certain that his boasts were indeed true. His mother helped him to prepare for the journey and pointing out the way to him, told him he must hasten if he would see his father before it was time for the sun god to . start on his day's journey. Proudly the youth started forth, going straight east, and before long he arrived at the bright palace where dwelt Apollo, his glorious father. The splendid palace was built of burnished gold and glittered with many jewels. From afar Apollo's all-seeing eye had watched Phaeton approaching. He recognized him as his own son and was heartily glad to see the youth. Phaeton now told him why he had come and Apollo's anger was kindled when he heard that 8 (Continued on anothetr page) "NOW PHYLLIS HAS ROSY CHEEKS" I always liked Phyllis and Ifelt sorry for her. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound when I was a girl of 12, to regulate my periods. I had backache, headache and had to stay out of school each month and go to bed sometimes for two days, with cramps. 1 began taking the Vegetable Compound and also Lydia E. Now I am married and have two lovely children. 1 . took the Vegetable Compound before and after these births and it certainly helped me. IRA RUMSEY, Box 2, Elm Creek, Nebraska "WE RECOMMEND IT TO MOTHERS" "I do not know what my daughter and myself would d<;J without your medicine. I have taken it for 10 years when 1 need it. In the beginning I was weak and was so nervous 1 did not want any one near me. I began taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and used Lydia E. Pinkham's Sanative Wash and now I keep these medicines always on hand. A year ago I took treatments for two months for backache and did not get any better. When thetwo months were up I took a bottle of the Vegetable Compound and found relief. My daughter takes the Vegetable Compound at her monthly periods for pains and she is able to attend sehool regularly. Any girl who has cramps ought to take it. We recommend it to mothers for their girls. MRS. G. SWENSON, 2601 21st A venue, Rock Island, Illinois p PHAETON AND THE SUN CHARIOT Phaeton's associates did not believe his son's boastful stories and that they had laughed him to scorn. His father made a sacred vow to grant whatever Phaeton might wish for. The fooliBh youth now asked to be allowed to drive the sun chariot for one day. "Because," saidhe, "the whole world can look up and see me and all will know, then, that thou art my father." "Alas! my son, no one but myself knows how to control and manage the four fiery steeds of the chariot. Ask something else, Phaeton." "But, my father, you have already promised," reminded Phaeton. The sun god could not break the sacred vow he had just made, so was obliged to place the reins in Phaeton's young and inexperienced hands with the warning not to use -the whip, and to be careful not to leave the broad highway. Phaeton promised. Then signalling the gate-keeper to fling open the gates of the morning, he dashed up into the heavens '1 in a blaze of glory. All went well for a few hours but Phaeton \ was so absorbed with wondering if the people on earth were looki11lg at him in his exalted position that he soon forgot all I caution and lost his way. In finding the right road again he drove too near the earth and burned it. The fields and wood-lands shriveled up, the rivers dried up and the earth was scorched and seared. Even the people were burned to a dark brown color. And to this day the inhaqitants of that beautiful sunny land are of the same dark brown shade. ACORNS AND ~AKS Because a young dreamer in Genoa, nearly five hundred · years ago, believed that the earth was round and one could reach the East by sailing West, we live in America. Because a thoughtful young man in Germany, about the same time, had a notiori that innumerable impressions might be made on paper from little metal letters, we have the world in our daily newspaper. Because a woman in New England, over fifty years ago, was convinced that the herb remedy she often made for herself and neighbors could be marketed to the benefit of all women, Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable CQmpound is sold today in every drug-store in the country. 10 NEVER OUT OF STYLE We live in a rapid age. Styles change over nig~t. A popular song lasts six weeks. Today's headlines are crowded off the front page by tomorrow's excitement. New perfumes, new cosmetics, new novelties appear every week. But as long as there are. women with their weaknesses and their ailments there will be a demand for a reliable, timeproven remedy like Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com,. pound. ''TIRED AND CAN'T SLEEP" "I think there is no other medicine on earth as good as Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetab~ Compound. My mother always used it and now my sisters and I use it and tell all our friends how good it is. My husband always brings me 'Pinkham's' whenever I say I feel tired and can't sleep. He thinks what the Vegetable Compound can't do for me, nothing else can. I take about six bottles of it every year. Always before and after t he birth of a child and whenever I feel tired and have no energy I have taken it, and to build me up after an operation following shortly after child-birth. It just simply made a new woman out of me as I gained in strength and weight. My mother takes it when she is nervous and weak and during the Change of Life. I only wish I could talk personally about this medicine to every suffering woman. I am sure I could convince them that it will do for them what it has done for me." MRS. A. C. ERVIN, Beryl, West Virginia "HAD NO APPETITE" "I was· in a weak and run-down condition after the baby's birth, had no appetite and could hardly stand on my feet because of the pains and weakness. For about two mon.ths l was under the doctor's care and then he told me to try Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound as he was doing me no good. I sent and got a bottle and after taking half of it I began to get better and would eat almost anything. I took three· bottles in all. I praise your wonderful medicine for it did so much for me and I will try to answer any letters written to me about it." MRS. J. J. McCLURE, Box 283, Brinkley, Arkansas 11 THE GOLDEN TOUCH 1'(.~ ~ King Midas of yore was so covetous and grasping that he often came to ~ grief in his eager desire for gain. One evening, when awakening from a doze as he sat on his royal / c:iJ throne, he noticed a shadow across c:ij the fl o or and looking up beheld · ,Jft Dionysus, god of wine and revelry, l/).t standing near him. §fJ" "Midas," said the handsome young ~ god, "thou art a greedy and avaricious ~ old king, but thou did'st a thing once which was pleasing to me. What is thy greatest wish? It shall be ful- ' filled." Midas at once fell on his knees before the god and begged that all he touch be changed to gold. Dionysus granted this and disappeared. King Midas then, anxious to try out his newly attained gift, went through his palace touching various objects and was overjoyed with his good fortune for everything he laid his hand upon turned to gleaming gold. Next into the palace gardens he strolled, touching the flowers there and was transported with delight to see them also change their colorful petals to gold. . Elated with the many miracles he could perform by a simple touch, he called his servants together and bade them prepare a great feast to celebrate his new power. His commands were obeyed to the letter. Midas' greedy eyes twinkled and for the moment he forgot the golden touch at the sight of the many viands prepared for him to feast upon. But he remembered it quite suddenly when his napkin, the dishes and all the food changed to gold at hiB magic touch. So he was obliged to leave the festive board as hungry as when he took his place there. Craving food in the midst of plenty, he passed into the throne-room where he sat in silent meditation. 12 (Continued on another page) 11THE COLONEL'S LADY AND JUDY O'GRADY" Women in every walk of life-factory workers, stenographers, clerks, school-teachers, housekeepers, telephone operators, librarians, students, wives, mothers, brides, athletic girls and stay-at-home girls-find relief from their common ailments in Lydia E. In years gone by the Pinkham mcdiuine has been one of my best friends and after reading the little book left at my door I resolved to write and tell you of my experience with your medicine. I have taken many bottles of it in my younger days when my children were small. It helped me as nothing else would and I am sure it saved me from going to the Hospital. I h!).ve recornmended the Vegetable Compound to my daughter for weakness and displacement and to many others. I could write a good deal but a few words are better than many. I will always speak a good word for it and you may use this testimonial as you wish." MRS. CARRIE L. CHASE, 8 Pleasant Street, Northfield, Vermont "IN ALL KINDS OF WEATHER" "I feel that I must write you a letter because I am so thankful for what Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound has done for me. When I first took it I was 18 years old and I would always be in bed for two days at my monthly periods with sickness at my stomach and pains in my back and sides. I was very nervous at those times, too. My father had a dairy barn and I milked cows and carried milk a long way to the house in all kinds of weather. I read testimonial letters where the Vegetable Compound had helped girls and women, and mother got it for me. I took it until I did not know whatfain was and felt like a new person. Now since my marriage am taking it again for weakness. I have told many women about the Vegetable Compound and I do all I can to have them take it." MRS. HERSHEL RESLER, Odon, Indiana 13 THE GOLDEN TOUCH He had sat there but a few minutes when his dearly bcloYcd little daughter came in. "Father, the roses in the garden are all spoil£:d. I cannot pluck them," she said, sobbing. The king was moved by his daughter's unhappiness and sought to lift her to his knee and stroke the soft warm curls, but the instant he touched her she stood a golden ~atue before him. · Aghast at the change his touch had wrought in his adored little daughter the king covered his eyes and wept. On hearing his name spoken, Midas, looking through tear-dimmed eye~ saw once more, Dionysus. - "Take back this curse, the golden touch," implored Midas. "Go bathe in the river Pactolus and bring back some of the water," said the god. "Sprinkle it over this child if you would recover her and be rid of this power." Midas obeyed and was happier to hold in his arms again his precious child than to have his whole kingdom changed to gold. To this day the sands of the Pactolus river are yellow as gold, made so by the foot-prints of king Midas. POLLYANNA SAYS "It takes a woman's hand and a child's presence to make a home." Hundreds of homes ring with the laughter of merry children whom their mothers call their "Pinkham babies." "I HAVE A BABY BOY" "Your medicine certainly is doing wonderful work. I have to let you know how grateful I am. Every month ever since I was 15 until last year I suffered with cramps. Nothing would relieve me and I was' weak and had to stay in bed. I operate a power sewing-machine and I could not do my work. I spent a lot of money for doctors and they all said I must go and have an operation before I could have any children. My sister was terribly weak and when Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound did her so much good she induced me to try it. Almost from the first two bottles I was helped. Now I can laugh at doctors as I have a baby boy and we are both going fine. If it were not for the strength ·your medicine has given me I might not have had my darling boy." MRS. I could not do a bit of housework and could hardly walk across the room without fainting. My husband took me to several local doctors and each one advised an operation and they said it was absolutely necessary. I had had an opera· tion for appendicitis and as I weigh 200 pounds and it took so long to heal, I would not think of another operation. HUBBARD, Park Farm Cottage, Park Farm, Folkestone, Kent, England 15 THE STORY OF ARACHNE Long, long ago there lived a proud and pretty maiden named Arachne. She was not only a neat and thrifty housekeeper but she was also an expert needlewoman. Despite her beauty and her many accomplishments, however9 no one cared for her company for she was constantly bragging about the wonderful things she could embroider with her needle and floss, I Now Minerva, goddess of wisdom, ~......_:>..,.!-\ was also very skilful in the same art and could weave such beautiful pat.. terns as Arachne had never even heard of. But the maiden boasted again and again of her talent and often said that no one could weave as beautifully a~ she; not even Minerva herself. When the goddess heard these con- . ceited remarks she became very angry and decided to come down from Mount Olympus to earth and punish this vain young hussy. So she disguised herself as an ugly old hag and came to Arachne's home where she sat down to rest and talk a bit. The old hag, .seeing some pieces of pretty embroidery here and there in the room, asked Arachne who did this beautiful work. "Oh, I did it myself. I can weave more beautifully than ths goddess Minerva. I don't care if she herself should hear me say it. I only wish she would hear it and suggest a contest,n bragged Arachne. This so displeased Minerva that she threw off her disguis6 and condescended to accept the invitation. They took up their looms and turning their backs to each other began to weave. Back and forth the needles flashed as each deftly portrayed a most interesting picture worked in bright colors. Arachne's pattern was in truth a wonderful creation. But when Minerva placed her work beside it for comparison she 16 (Continued on another page)' "HOLD ON TO' HEALTH" is one of the seven laws of the Camp-Fire Girls. lt is a promise and a prophesy that girls just on the borderland of womwood are being trained as never before in the scientific and i11.telli· gent care of their health. CANTERBURr, Box 142, Tohasket, Washington "WAS ALWAYS UPSET" ttl am writing to tell you how much your medicine has· helped me. Beginning when I wa,s 14, I suffered for five yean~ with cramps. I had pains in my back, both sides and down my legs, and my stomach was always upset at those timeR. I had to lay off from work for four to five days almost every time. I was doing cannery work, canning, sealing, etc., but had to quit work when sick as I would be so weak I could hardly walk across the room. I tried all kinds of doctor's medicine without help, so a woman friend told me of Lydia E. Pink .. ham's Vegetable Compound. I have found relief every time while sick and it helps me more each time. Every one says I am a healthier and a stronger girl. I am recommending the Vegetable Compound to all my friends who tell us how they suffer, and I am willing to answer letters from women asking about it." JULIA SCHMIDT, 652 North Front Street, Salem, Oregon 17 THE STORY OF ARACHNE was much humiliated to find that Minerva's was far supenor to her own. She now realized that she had failed and that aU of her boasting had been a dreadful mistake. She was now so ashamed, so embarrassed and jealous of Minerva's skill that in (lcspair she seized a rope, threw it over a beam in the ceiling, then tied it about her neck and hanged herself. Minerva, watching the foolish girl swaying to and fro from the rope, smiled cynically and changed Arachne to a beautiful black velvety spider. Now to this day one may see her weav~ ing and spinning her webs in most any nook or corner. uTHE DEAREST BABY IN THE WORLD" .Do you know him? Of course you do. He lives right in your home town, just as he lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and Oscaloosa., Iowa, and in Hawk Run, Pennsylvania! All babies are dear, for even a tiny baby's hand is big enough to hold a heart or two. Thousands of childless women have found undreamed-of joy and satisfaction in a crowing, growing baby, after taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compow1d. · "WE ARE VERY PROUD OF HIM" "After losing two babies inside of two weeks after each waa born, I was advised to take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I took seven bottles and felt very good the whole . nine months the next time. I didn't have the pains nor the burning in my side and my next baby was an easy birth. I am feeling very well now and am doing my own work and nursing the baby. He is a lovely little boy five months old and we are very proud of him. I am sure the Vegetable Compound was of great help to me. I am taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Pills for Constipation right along to ll!Ove the bowels daily. My older sister has started taking the Vegetable Compound .as she was bothered the same way I was. I am willing for you to use this letter as I recommend the Vegetable Compound to all women who have troubles similar to mine. I am willing to answer letters from women who want to find something to help them." 18 MRS. JOHN CHEGASI-I, Box 171, Hawk Run, Pennsylvania ' I ~- I -I f I' .• } IT WAS EASffiR THEN The ancient Greeks lived a simple and leisurely life. The long hours in the out-of-doors, the food they ate, the loose clothing they wore and their interest in games and sports, all combined to give them the physical perfection we so much admire. It isn't so with us. We lack exercise, we hurry, we worry, we eat wrong foods and our bodies rebel. Headaches result and nervous fatigue. We get run-down and cannot resist colds. To correct this unnatural condition get more sunshine ap.d exercise and let the Pinkham medicines help to restore your lost vitality. "KEPT ImR FROM DOING THINGS" "My daughter took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound to avoid the severe pains which she was subject to every month. She would have backache and sharp pains ill the abdomen which kept her from doing things she had planned to do. She could not keep food on her stomach and her whole abdomen would be sore. She read in the papPr's about Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound helping and women and as I was taking it she thought she would. After taking three boxes of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound Tablets she was relieved of the pains and could go ahead with her work. I recommend the Vegetable Compound to other mothers and you are welcome to publish this letter." MRS. HARTIG, R. R. No.4. Newburgh, Indian[} "TIRED ALL THE TIME" "For almost two years I had sick-headache, dizzy spells and tired feelings all the time and at the monthly period I hacl such pains I would have to go to bed. My nerves were very weak too and after my second child was born I was in such a run-down condition, weak and nervous, that I could hardly do my housework. I was reading your advertisements in the papers and one day I insisted on my husband getting me u bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. He did so and I was feeling better after the first bottle and am now on my fourth. I am lots better and would not be without it. I recommend it to all." MRS. ERNEST SETTY, R. No.6, Wilmington, Ohio 19 PANDORA AND THE MYSTERIOUS BOX ·Before woman was created man dwelt on the earth in a state of perfect contentment. The air was pleasant, ~ - white clouds floated in the azure sky and 1 -' flowers bloomed profusely over mountain -- and valley. As yet, trouble was a thing quite unknowntoman. According t o the ancient idea of the beginning of things, the first woman was the beautiful Pandora. She was originated by the gods who bestowed upon her many captivating attractions and then sent her to earth to bring sorrow and disaster to the human - raeewith hercuriosity. Epi.metheus, a luckless young fellow, believing that such a lovely creature would be a blessing to humanity, fell in love with her and received her as a precious gift from the gods. One day when Epimetheus and Pandora, in company with a gr~up of merry fellows, were dancing on a grassy knoll near their abode, they saw coming down the road toward them Hermes the messenger of the.gods carrying upon his shoulder a lar-ge, heavy box. He seemed so tired that he could scarcely walk. Too weary to carry his box farther, he asked if he might leave it with them for a while. They consented, so he placed it in a corner of their dwelling and departed. It was a beautiful case, inlaid with many sparkling gems. Around it was a gilded cord, tied in a very intricate knot. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound sold in one year could be placed end to end, they would make a column as high as the Woolworth Building. And there would be enough left over to extend from Lynn, Massachusetts, to Cleveland, Ohio. "I USE IT REGULARLY" "I suffered with female weakness or whites so badly that it made me weak and I could hardly walk around. A friend told me to try Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and [ also used Lydia E. Pinkham's Sanative Wash. I felt so refreshed that I use it regularly. I certainly tell any one who suffers from a tired, run-down feeling to try the Vegetable Compound and I would be glad to write' to any one about what g(1od the Vegetable Compound is to women. I certainly have great faith in it." MRS. KATE PEACHE, 2817 Kennedy A venue, Baltimore, Maryland "A WONDERFUL FRIEND" "I am on the fifth bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and it is a wonderful friend to women. For a long • time I had been in a run-down condition. I suffered with severe headaches and my right side bothered me very much. I had fluch tired feelings and it truly seemed as though I couldn't get sleep and rest enough. The doctors advised an immediate operation for my side but I put it off and finally I began to take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. The medicine has been used by members of my family and finally to please my grandmother I got a bottle of it. My headaches, nervousness and tired feelings have left me and I cannot say enough in praise of the Vegetable Compound. I had always suffered periodically but it has helped me very much. I will gladly answer all letters and I will always recommend your medicine to my friends." MRS. WILLIS RUSSELL, Box 483, Bingham, Maine. For sale by druggists everywhere. 21 PANDORA ~ THE MYSTERIOUS BOX Pandora at once began to speculate as to what it might contain and asked Epimetheus to help her open it. "Oh, no indeed, Pandora. We must not meddle with it," answered Epimetheus, whereat Pandora drew her pretty mouth into a pout. "Let us not be unhappy, Beloved," said Epimetheus, "Come out and dance with us and forget the box." Pandora consented, saying that she would come presently and Epimetheus joined his friends again. Alone with the mysterious box, Pandora's curiosity took possession of her and she tried to untie the cord. Holding her ear to the lid she listened and from within heard many little voices beseeching her to t' hurry and release them. Feverishly, but without avail, she strove with the entangled fastening, and suddenly it became loo~e and she removed it. Now the box was filled with all the diseases and plagues known to mankind to this day, and when Pandora raised the lid, alas! they swarmed into the room and stung her unmercifully. Epimetheus and his companions, hearing her cries of distress, rushed in and were also bitten by the evil insects. At once all the merry-making was changed to sorrow and woe. In the midst of their suffering another voice, sweet and gentle, was heard from within the box, saying, "Let me out, l '\\'ill help you." The tenor-stricken pair knew not what to do, • but Epimetheus thinking it perhaps a wise thing to obey the voice, told Pandora to open the box again. Then Hope, a white-winged spirit, came out, touched the victims and healed all their wounds. ''Grow old along with me, The best is yet to be." With her children grown-up, the l;lliddle-aged woman finds time to do the things she never had time to do before-read the new books, see the new plays, enjoy her gTand-children, take an active part in church and civic affairs. Far from being pushed aside by the younger set, she finds a full, rich life of her own. That is, if her health is good. Thousands of women past fifty, say they owe their vigor and health to Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. 22 THE DANGEROUS AGE for a woman is between 45 and 50. Most women dread the approach of middlf' age because they know, only too well, the depressing ailments which it brings. We are continually receiving testimonials from happy women who have been brought safely through this critical period by the faithful use of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. ccMY OLD SYMPTOMS HAVE LEFT ME" ''My troubles came at the Change of Life and for 19 months I suffered untold agony with pains in my head and in my right side and two doctors advised an operation. My headache got · so bad at times that I could not see to do my work and I just had to lie down. My husband saw an ad. about a woman troubled as I was who was helped by taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, so he went and purchased a bottle and brought it home to me. This medicine has done me more good than all the other medicines I have taken in the last two years. I take Lydia E. Pinkham's Herb Medicine with the Vegetable Compound and also take Lydia E. Pinkham's Pills for Constipation. I feel like a new person as my old symptoms have left me and I am simply overjoyed at this wonderful relief." MRS. FRED W. SIEMERING, R. No. 1, Box 54, Shubert, N cbraska "HAD A FEELING IT WOULD DO ME GOOD" "I had been flowing for three months without stopping and the doctor told me I was at the Change of Life. I read about your medicine and one day I just had a feeling that it would do me good, so I sent and got a bottle of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I had only taken half of a bottle when I got up and started to do my work. The medicine gave me an appetite and strengthened me wonderfully. I became well and strong. I cannot praise this medicine highly enough. I surely will advise all women to take it and they won't have to use rouge to look healthy. My two daughters are taking it and one is looking to give birth to a baby. I wouldn't let her do without your medicine and she is also using Lydia E. Pinkham's Sanative Wash." MRS. HARVEY TUCKER, 408 Walker Street, Shelbyville, Indiana 23 ATLAS ~ "l)j~ \ Many hundred years ago the people :,.. --' '_II ~""- beli~ved that the heavens wero held ~,, v,;; ~ up m place by a great giant whose 1 ~~ name was Atlas. He was so huge and '' ''' .~ mighty that often his head and shoul- : · ders were hidden from sight by the ~-\ __ :./-:. ~ clouds. For ages Atlas had held \lp the heavy. sky. He often eased too weight from one shoulder to the other to rest himself. Only once did he try to shift the heavy load on some one else. This I was Hercules, another great giant whom he tricked into taking the en· cumbrance from him while oo could go and bring back some magic apples for which Hercules was searching to carry to the King. As Atlas returned ~ with the apples he wished more and t·i· more that he could remain free from . hls compelling task, so he decided to leave the burden on Hercules forever. As he came in sight of the jovial giant waiting patiently for him, Atlas shomed to him·that he would himself carry the magic apples to the King and would have hastened away but Hercules said very sweetly, "That will be fair enough if you will but hold the heavens while I place a pad on my back." Atlas again shouldered the great load and Hercules seizing the apples, fled, leaving Atlas in his old position again supporting the weight of the heavens. Time dragged slowly for the poor giant. His shoulders stooped and his head grew white and hoary as the centuries rolled by. One dfl,y he heard that a brave young man named Perseus had slain Medusa, a weird creature whose beautiful face was crowned with horrible snaky locks. Any one looking upon this face would be turned to stone. He was thinking of this when he saw the young hero coming toward him carrying something which he kept carefully covered up. "What have you there, Hero~" asked Atlas. 24 (Continued on another page) "THE BLUES" are popular over the radio. "Blue spells" are not popular anywhere. The girl who looks discouraged and glum, who is sensitive over fancied slights and often on the verge of tears, will never be the life of the party! Blues are a nervous condition which often result from some derangement of the delicate female organs. This condition yields readily to the steadying influence of Lydia E. Pinkham'~ Vegetable Compound. ------- "MY FRIENDS SAY I LOOK BETTER" "I have taken Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound for better health. Last summer my sister was out for a vaca.., tion on the farm and recommended it to me. I was completely run down, had headache, dizzy spells and was so nervous 1 could not sit still during the day and could not sleep the whole night. l was real weak, did not have any appetite and could not do even the housework. Everybody said, 'Why don't you do something for yourself? You look so pale.' I am very grateful for what the Vegetable Compound has done for me and have told my friends about it. HELEN CER.BO, Route B, Box 6, Calhan, Colorado "SUFFERED WITH MY HEAD" "I have taken Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound for several years. When my babies came I took it and it always helped me so much. About a year ago I got so bad with the Change of Life that I was not able to do my work. I suffered all the time and was so weak. I had no appetite and had hot spells all the time. The least notice would tear my nerves all up. I suffered with my sides, had pains all over me and for three weeks I thought I was losing my mind as I suffered so much with my head. I got some of the Vegetable Compound and it helped me so much that I am still taking it.'!--]lave taken the Pills for Constipation also and they do all they are recommended to do. You can use this letter if you want to, as I have not seen a letter from my home town and I know they are taking the medicine here." MR.S. ELIZABETH SOUTH, R.. R. No.7, Sullivan, Indiana 25 ATLAS "It is the head of Medusa," answered Perseus. "Uncover it and let me look upon it and be freed from the anguish of this misarable strain," said Atlas. , Perseus, turning his eyes away, lifted the cover from the weird yet beautiful head and Atlas gazing fascinated by the lovely face, was changed to stone. . To this day there stands a lofty mountain peak covered with snow and often hidden by the clouds. It is known as the Atlas mountain and is in exactly the same spot where, as we arc told, the great giant stood and bore up the weight of the heavens on his broad shoulders. THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST Every year brings to the shelves of your neighborhood drugstore a flood of new toilet preparations and proprietary medicines. Some, because of their attractive wrappings or their allming advertisements. find a rapid sale at first but are not 'repeaters'. Others are ordered again and again. One of these best sellers in ever.:r drug-store is Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound which has been used by women for over fifty years. "MY GRANDMOTHER USED IT" "I first took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound when I was a girl. I had awful headaches also pains. My back gave me some trouble too. My mother had taken it, also my grandmother used it in her family for her eight daughters and herself. I took only one bottle then. After I was married I took five bottles of the Vegetable Compound before I became a mother. I did all my housework, including washing and scrubbing floors and felt fine all the time. I think this medicine does more for women than anything else I know of. I surely recommend it to my friends and several have taken it because of my recommendation." MRS. W. 0. BLEWETT, Route B, Box 197a, Lakeland, Florida ' THE FOURTH GENERATION Have you ever heard a grandmother say, "My mother and I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound 50 years ago?" · In some families the fourth generation is relying on this famous medicine. 26 FROM PHILADELPHIA TO LYNN When the Centennial Exhibition was held in Philadelphia in 1876, a woman in Lynn, Mass., was just beginning to market her root and herb medicine. Her first large order was for eighteen dollars worth. Philadelphia is now celebrating the 1.50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In Lynn, six buildings are devoted to the manufacture of this same root and herb medicine, Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. Nearly 5,000,000 bottles were sold last year. "THE PICTURE OF HEALTH" "While I was carrying my first baby I suffered untold misery with a hard, prolonged birth. The second followed so close on to the first that I was afraid it would be weakly as I hadn't regained my strength yet from the first one. About five months before the birth of the second child I began taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and after taking it about a week I began to notice that I was not so miserable. I soon started gaining in strength and when the baby was she was as plump and healthy as she could be and is gaining faster than the first one ever did and I had a short and easy birth this time. We are both the picture of health and I caunot recommend the Vegetable Compound too highly as it has done wonders for me." MRS. JAMES R. LANKFORD, Box 39~, Rantoul, Illinois "A NICE CHUBBY BABY" "My dear mother said that Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound had helped her, and my husband said it had done his mother lots of good, so I took it before my baby was born. I had headaches and was all tired out. I did not i0::: as though I had life enough to do my work. Then a friend insisted th~t-l .,_ continue taking it afterwards for a while. The baby has been good and healthy and I am feeling fine. She was a nice, chubby baby, weighed eight pounds and is a -darling girl to this day, we think. I recommend the Vegetable Compound and I will answer letters from women asking about it." MRS. ERNEST HICKORY, Star Route, Briggs, Vermont 27 PROSERPINA Ceres, the goddess of () agriculture, had one fair daughter, Proserpina. This lovely blue-eyed 61P maiden was very much devoted to her mother and as Ceres was so bnsy with her many .r-~"--'--" tasks, Proserpina took it upon herself to care for all vegetation. One bright morning Proserpina having finished her tasks was spending the day with ~"--':::>\her nymphs in the woodland. They were twining wreaths of flowers and singing joyously as they laughed and danced together. While they were thus making merry thPy heard a rustle in the bushes and looking '----,c_ _________ _.J up were frightened to see the dark, ugly face of Pluto, ruler of the Dark Realms, pooring at them through the thick bushes. Seeing the beautiful Proserpina, the fairest of them all, seated among her maidens Pluto wished longingly to take lier away with him to share his dark and dismal throne. But knowing that she would never consent to this or go with him willingly, he pushed back the bushes and catching her up in his fliCv•iy'arms before she was scarcely aware, he placed her in his chariot and dashed away. Fearing lest at any moment he should meet her mother who would thwart his undertaking, he struck the ground with his mighty spear and a great yawning chasm opened into the earth . . Down through this dark passageway Pluto drove his black steeds and soon arrived at his throne in the Infernal Regions. Here he tried to console 28 (Continued on another page) IT MUST BE A GOOD MEDICINE :when it has been on the market for over fifty years, when dntggists report a steady demand for it and increasing sales, when women all over the country recommend it to their onighbom and thousands of them write us each year to tell os how much it has helped them-it must be goodl "WHAT YOUR MEDICINE DID" "At the age of 17 I married and as I was very young and ¥ery thin my mother kept at me to take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound as she had used it and it had relieved 'ncr so much that she thought it would strengthen me. So I got the Vegetable Compound and took it for seven months -and I picked up and looked fine. I had a fine strapping boy 10orn to me and the doctor said I was perfectly all right. A vear later my husband was out of work and I could not oa.fford your medicine and I lost a baby and the doctor had .all he could do to save me. Then I realized what the Vegetable Compound had really done for me. I got more of medicine and built myself up again and I felt fine for years. Then I believe I hurt myself chopping wood as I to have severe pains. I became nervous, yellow and very t hin. I again took the Vegetable Compound and in three mouths more I was much better. It strengthened my organs 1!10 that I have another baby-a 9 pound girl, strong and healthy. I am now in the best of health, nurse my baby and I praise the Vegetable Compound as I realize that by ~aving healthy babies it makes a better generation to come." MRS. H. FAIRWEATHER, 86 E. Main Street, Middletown, New York "HELPED ME A GREAT DEAL" "My hack was giving me trouble almost every morning and lllight for the last two years. I felt wretched, my appetite had ~eft me and I could hardly do my housework. I rea!Kr! the papers about Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound so I decided to try it and it has helped me a great deal. I live on a large fl'llTil and I do my housework now and help do the chores. l think that all women and girls who take this medicine are 11atisfied with it." MRS. NAT. NICOLETTI, .R.R. No.1, Box 200, Goodman, Missouri 29 \. PROSERPINA Proserpina. He gave her many beautiful gifts and placed her in a handsome seat by his side on his throne, to reign with him as his queen. Now as this unhappy maiden was being carried down the dark chasm leading from the earth, she had turned and tossed her gauzy mantle to the Breezes and told them to carry it to her mother. It was many, many days before Ceres could find any trace of her beloved daughter. Day after day, she sought for her in vain. When at last the dainty mantle was laid at her feet and she was told where to find her daughter, she was brokenhearted and neglecting her duties she withdrew into a lonely cavern and grieved there unseen. All vegetation on the earth withered away, and being threatened by a dreadful famine the people implored the gods to help them. But Ceres heard not their cries of woe. So at last it was decided that Proserpina might return to earth again provided she had eaten no food during her sojourn in the Dark World. Truly she had partaken of nothing but six pomegranjte seel)s and the gods ruled ' as she had eaten six seeds in the Dark Regions she must spend that number of months there with Pluto in that Kingdom. And to this day, when Proscrpina comes back to earth it il' Spring-time, for the flowers bloom and the trees bud forth. I All the earth dresses itself in new foliage and the birds trill in their gladness of her approach. But when she must leave again and return to the Dark Realm, joy on the earth ceases, the skies weep and all nature grieves at her departure. IF SOME GOOD FAIRY should appear as they did in the old fairy tales, and offer us three wishes, what would you choose! W~th'i It's a transient thing and brings its own cares. 1fappiness! It's an elusive thing which we have to give away to keep. Health? Ah! There's the best gift. Health is riches that gold cannot buy, and surely health is cause enough for happiness. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound may be the good fairy who offers this priceless gift of health. 30 A KETTLE THAT HOLDS 5000 GALLONS When Lydia E. Pinkham first began to make her Vegetable Compound she used her largest kettle on the kitchen stove. Today, the Vegetable Compound is made in great steel tanks, lined with glass. Each tank holds 5000 gallons. To keep pace with the demand for this famous medicine, we make a tankful every two days. "A MINOR OPERATION" "I feel so thankful for the great benefit I have derived from taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, that I must write you and let you know exactly my case. For two years and a half I had been suffering from excessive flowing. Some .. times it would continue for four weeks. About a year ago I went through a minor operation in the hospital and the doctor said if that did me no good I'd need to have a major one. I was just about as bad as ever and my husband suggested the major one, anything to be well again! I had to take to my bed again and the land-lady made me try your wonderful eine. I gradually felt better, got the medicine myself, and next month it seemed as if.a miracle had been performed. I am a busy woman and on my feet a lot but could never do it if r had not the Vegetable Compound at hand. This letter is written out of honest thankfulness and I will certainly recommend the medicine to any one in the condition I was in." MRS. BETSY RISING, 203 14th Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan "I WAS PERSUADED" "I have taken Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound when I was just all run-down and my nerves were unstrung. Because of the good effects my sister and other friends had received from the Vegetable Compound I was per~uaded to try it. I took three boxes, and am feeling fine but am ne~-c~ without it. It is wonderful! I continue it, as it gives relief. My work is general housework on a farm, and I can lift 100 pounds of feed as easy as any one. I recommend the Vegetable Compound and you may use this letter as a testimonial. MRS. H. M. FRENCH, Box 167, Mexico, New York 31 LYDIA E. PINKHAM'S HERB MEDICINE Lydia E. Pinkham's Herb Medicine is a reli·· able general tonic, equally good for men and women , It takes the place of Grandma's sulphur and mo" lasses in the Spring and is much more pleasant t Cll the taste. Keep it in the medicine chest and give; it to the whole family-parents and children-a·t any time through the year when they need such ~ medicine. Humors and Eruptions are among the mo:r~ ·common indications and results of a run dowt~ ' condition. Such eruptions are unpleasant, oftev , \embarrassing, and give the face an unhealthy - -'~lppearance. They are not usually especially sen ous or dangerous. More serious results may come., however, at any time from the accumulated impuri ties which they indicate. Good home treatment is necessary. Eat plain.,' nutritious and easily digested food. Get plenty o~ sleep and fresh air. Take Lydia E. Pinkham's Herb Medicine one~ half hour before meals. If constipa · tion is present-as it often is-take Lydia E. Pink·· ham's Pills for Constipation. Full-text | Lydia E. A. C. POLLYANNA SAYS "It takes a woman's hand and a child's presence to make a home." I operate a power sewing-machine and I could not do my work. I spent a lot of money for doctors and they all said I must go and have an operation before I could have any children. My sister was terribly weak and when Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound did her so much good she induced me to try it. Almost from the first two bottles I was helped. I recommend the Vegetable Compound to other mothers and you are welcome to publish this letter." My nerves were very weak too and after my second child was born I was in such a run-down condition, weak and nervous, that I could hardly do my housework. ''Grow old along with me, The best is yet to be." My headache got · so bad at times that I could not see to do my work and I just had to lie down. THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST Every year brings to the shelves of your neighborhood drugstore a flood of new toilet preparations and proprietary medicines. JAMES R.
