ALTHOUGH woman ha:s been con~
sidered the down-trodden sex, although
men have been accused of tak~
ing unto themselves all the rights and
privileges, history tells of many women
who have had as great, or a. greater
part in molding the destinies of nations
than have men of like periods.
To be sure, only the favored woman
has been able to rule in the past, but it
must be remembered that the common
man formerly held no more power than
did his wife and only Kings could
wield any political or cultural influence
in those days.
Even in times so far in the past that
we have no written record of them,
women held positions of power. The
Queen kept her own establishment of
house and attendants, which -were on
an equality of those of the King. She
was supposed to have gifts of magic
and powers over invisible beings. She
had the right to act as Queen until the
male heir to the throne became of age.
This we know from ancient Egyptian
tombs.
Queen Hatshepau reigned jointly
with her brother. She is said to have
poisoned him and to have had his name
taken from all public monuments.
After his death Hatshepau became sole
ruler for a period of twenty years. She
was a most capable woman.
It was several centuries before another
woman came into public promine~
ce as a ruler-Cleopatra, the last
of the Pharaohs to rule Egypt. She
was only seventeen years old when she
ascended the throne shared jointly
with her brother Ptolemy XII. Every~

So many things in this day and age put a terrific

leaders came forward to take
the place of Susan B. .Anthony

C ARRIE Chapman Catt and
the women of her era
finally gained the nineteenth
amendment. Since that time,
although women have been
steadily moving forward politically,
they have taken time
for other movements in which
they have believed.
American women first voted
in a general election in 1920.
The political parties welcomed
them and divided appointive
coriunittee jobs between men
and women. Today we find, in
the states and in the nation,
women and men chairmen or
Vice chairmen for each party.
A National women's party-was
formed and is still active,
but women, .generally, are
working in the old parties
shoulder to shoulder with the
men. Whether, as has been
charged, women have been
submerged in these organizations
and have lost a certain
amount of prestige and power
is an open question.
I T HAS even been suggested
that women named as chairmen
of women's interests or
movements within the parties
are named because the men
leaders think they can influence
them rather than because
of special knowledge or capability
for these appointments.
Be that as it may, the number
of women elected and appointed
to office is increasing
gradually from year to year.
