This is done to provide jobs and to insure prompt payment for thousands of idle carpenters, painters, plumbers, electricians, ·masons and other workers connected with the building trades~ These men will spend their wages for products which other men have raised or manufactured. The government hopes that this will help to bring about better times for all of us. How to Get a Loan Apply to your local bank or local lending agency. Of course your credit will have to be investigated and you wi11 prebably have to tell just what repairs you intend to make~ - Approved home owners with regular incomes or farmers with seasonal incomes may obtain loans from $100 to $2,000. The figured walls, figured over- ' drapes and figured chair run into each other and distract the eye: Figured overhangings call for plain walls. The figured chair is permissible but the footstool would be better with a plain covering. The chair is placed back to the window, obstructing its own light. If it were swung around the occupant could enjoy the daylight as well as the light from the lamp. The large picture over the fireplace is good but the two small pictures give a wide, top-heavy effect One picture is sufficient near the window, Here is the same room transformed by good taste. See how much more restful and attractive it is. Try to study your own rooms with the critical eye of an outsider. Let this little book suggest how to make them more attractive. 7 11You Can Depenc:l on lydia E. Pink~am' s Vese.table Compound11 say these live working women A Dressmaker "I am a dressmaker. Any handy man (or woman) can put · .them up at small expense. If you close them in, using stock size doors, they make neater and more attractive closets. In kitchens and pantries run the shelves or closets right up to the ceiling. If you stop them a foot or so below the ceiling you simply provide another place for dust to collect. Articles not frequently used should be stored on these top shelves: Do you keep the refrigerator in the back hall? Isn't there room above it for a few shelves. An excellent place to keep canned goods, cleaning supplies, electric lamps, etc. 'A metal shield over your radiator protects the wall and provides a shelf for books, pottery or small plants. What About that Terrible Old Ceiling? Cracked or shaky plaster is not only unsightly but also dangerous. Ceilings have been known to fall on people. A new plaster ceiling can be installed by a competent mason without quite as much dirt as you might expect. Plaster board comes in large sheets which are nailed over the old plaster. The seams are usually covered with ·strips of light wood or moulding and then painted. Some very pretty panel effects can be obtained. If you do not care for the wooden stripping, the seams can be filled with crack filler which should be rubbed .smooth before painting. The result is a white, smooth ceiling which can hardly be told from the best plaster job. " Dragging Feeling and Pains in My Back" "I am 63 years old. I took Lydia E. Every room occupied by two people should have two separate closets, but few do. Even master bedrooms in model homes often have only one closet. So we must make the best of it. Of course you have a pole in your closet from which your clothes are suspended on hangers. There is also a swinging type of fixture which holds several hangers. Your best dresses deserve a cretonnecovered wardrobe hanger which holds several dresses or coats. , Have you a -shelf above the pole? It is convenient for hats; Odds and ends may be stored in cardboard boxes on this shelf. Label each box on the visible end to save your temper later . . Have you seen the new racks which go on the inside of the closet door?· They hold hats, neckties and shoes within easy reach. Price about one dollar. Of course this rack takes up some space. If your closet ' is so shallow that the rack pushes your shoes into your dresses when the door is closed, better· not attempt to have one. In deep closets, they are very handy. If you are blessed with a large wardrobe closet, perhaps with a~window in it, you can have a pole for your dresses, a shelf for your hats and built-in drawers or cupboards for shoes·; underw~ar and "his" belongings. With this storage space in the closet, you may eliminate the chiffoniere and make one dresser serve two people. 18 • ... Or, if your slip hangs or you have a run in your left stock- .11 ing, this is the time to find it out. 1 . A light is essential in a large closet. It can be ;;o wired that it goes on when the door is opened and goes out when the door is closed. If you can't afford this luxury, ft you'll have to cultivate your memory. You can save the expense of wiring for a light in your closet by buying a small portable light (see ilhjsttation) which hangs on any hook or nail. It is made by a flashlight manufacturer and runs by battery. Price about $1.5.0. Can You Take Care of Your Home? It's lots of fun to fix up the house and you expect to,enjoy it afterward. To entertain your friends there and to find joy and satisfaction in its new charms. You can't do it when you don't feel well. Every flight of ,1 stairs should be well lighted. Sometimes, it is possible to put a small window into the wall where it lights the stairway. Electric lights top and bottom of the stairs are essential, and a light on a shadowy landing may pre· vent an accident. Paint a white strip at the front edge of your cellar stairs so you can tell where the step ends. Don't go downstairs in the dark; Turn on the light. Torn stair carpets and loose rubber treads are another ., source of accidents. Take care of them. Of course you need a banister or. h and r ail on every flight of stairs. The cost is slight. Elderly people feel so much ., safer when they have "something to take hold of". Does Your Chimney Smoke? Are you annoyed by poor drafts or a ·smoky fireplace. Perhaps your chimney is too short. It should not .only be taller than the highest point of your own roof, it should be of sufficient height so that the air currents are not cut off by adjoining buildings; It is a comparatively simple matter to increase the height of a chimney and well worth the expense• 21 lighting Your Home A cheerful home must be well lighted. If you don't believe it, pull down all your window shades two· thirds of the way to the sill. Try to work or read or sew in that atmosphere and see how 'gloomy and depressed you feel. Then run up the shades, push back the heavy overdrapes, let the sunlight pour in and see how your spirits will revive. Speaking of overdrapes, don't have them so heavy or so wide that they shut out most of the light. After all, :what's the sense of having windows if we cover them up with ·two or three thicknesses of cloth? Draperies can add much to the charm of your windows, but don't forget that they are windows. Artificial light is a problem, particularly in older houses. When you are making improvements, you will do well to have an electrician install extra outlets in several .rooms. This will allow you to place floor lamps or table lamps where they are most convenient for reading, writing or sewing. Adequate lighting is essential if the family is to avoid eye strain. Outlets in each room also allow you to plug in the vacuum cleaner and other appliances without using clumsy extensio~n cords. The chief cause of a poorly lighted home lies in the lamps (bulbs) themselves. There are many cheap lamps on the market, made by inferior or foreign companies and sold as "just as good". Their low price tempts us but poor lamps are never a bargain. They usually cost more to operate. 22 Lighting Your Home •.• Continued For example, a poor 100 watt lamp may deliver no more light than a good 60 watt lamp but it burns 100 watts of cur• rent, so the family pays for electricity which is wasted. Labo· ratory tests prove that inferior lamps will not burn as long and this means spending more money to replace them in a ~hort time. It is actually more economical to insist upon lamps made by reputable American companies. Such manufacturers are continually improving their products to give the public more light aud better light at less cost. •• It Helps Me in Half an Hour" "I am a farmer's wife, a hard working woman with five childreru I have been using Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound for several years for weakness and rundown condition. At first I took it three times a day. Now I take it off and on whenever I need it. I have f,ound out that it helps me in half an hour after I take it and I am able to work the rest of the day. My daughter is now thirteen vears old. I am giving the Vegetable Compound to her. Pander who lives at 286 Jefferson Street, Rochester, Pa., had five children and dreaded another confinement because she always suffered so. Someone told her about Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. She took it before her sixth baby came and she wa~ delighted with the way it helped her. The baby was an 8 7-2· pound girl. Mrs. Pander had an easy time and i.s fe~ling fine; • 23 A Room for a · Girl We can depend upon almost any girl to have a fairly definite picture of how she wants her room to look. She will get ideas from magazines and motion pictures and the homes of her friends. Then she will persuade Mother and Dad to let her do her room over. Or, if the family treasury is low, she can transform its shabbiness with quick drying enamel and colorful chintz. Almost any girl has the homemaking instinct. A Room for a Boy It's different with her brother. He may appreciate a well furnished room but he won't argue over k If he can have a place to call his own, he is usually satisfied. As a result, Brother's room becomes the final resting place for odds and ends of furniture no longer usable elsewhere. A boy's room should be plain, substantial and practical. It need not be junky. Linoleum is a good choice for the floor, since it is easily cleaned and it deadens the noise of boyish feet. A hard wood floor with a large rug (again we suggest linoleum) is practical. Boys hate small rugs which slip around. He needs a desk. A large table or workbench is handy for his radio and his numerous hobbies. He likes a bookcase for favorite volumes. Perhaps he can make it at school. A large comfortable chair and a lamp for reading or studying 24 A Room for a Boy . • . Continued will delight his heart; Keep the "den" idea in mind, even if you have to make the sleeping accom· modations secondary. A chest of drawers with a small mirror eliminates .the bureau. A studio couch is excellent fot a small room. If he already has a large bed, he deserves a good spring ~·· and mattress. Let the spread be washable. Silk spreads are ~·too sissy" for him. A top blanket in Indian pattern is warm and sensible. Let hini choose his own pictures, whether they be hunting scenes or movie stars. After all, it's his room. Consult him about the window drapes, too. He won't want anything flimsy or fussy. Straight hangings are appropriate and decidedly good results can be obtained from inexpensive washable materials. For colors, avoid pink and blue. This is a man's room• Most men like a touch of red, but don't overdo it. Substantial, varnished furniture is practical. If you have odd pieces'stain them walnut. · Give your boy a cheerful room of his own. Let him bring his friends there for the activities of youth, and you will help to keep him off the streets. Although color is largely a matter of choice, we should take into consideration the size and location of the room. Red, orange and yellow are warm colors. Green, blue and orchid are cool colors. Therefore. a sunny bedroom can be successfully decorated in orchid and green but this same combination would make a north room seem cold and dull. If you like green, combine it with rose for the north room because rose is a warm color. If you insist upon orchid for the north room, combine it with yellow to create a sunny effect. One delightful study always seems cheerful and bright although the sun never reaches it. Straight hanging curtains of thin yellow . material striped with orange and a line of green were used at the windows. The light sifts through them and makes us think the sun is shining. Use vivid colors sparingly. An orange pottery bowl -or a crimson pillow will brighten up a dull corner and please the eye. Think how monotonous a green kitchen could be if it had pale green walls, deeper green paint, a green linoleum, green stove, green breakfast set with green dishes and-green and white cottage curtains. Change the walls to deep cream, use lotus green paint for all woodwork including the cupboards. Choose a linoleum with broken blocks of two shades of green, cream and a dash of red. Get a cream and green stove, cottage curtains of cream material with red figures, and a gay red clock. Red is the compliment of green. If blue is the predominating color, a dash of orange here and there will pep it up. 26 The Colonial Atmosphere If you live in a Cape Cod cot• tage or a simple colonial home, heavy overs~uffed furniture and oriental rugs are out of place; A Governor , Winthrop desk, gate-leg table, Windsor chairs, mahogany highboy, or lowboy and wing-back chair are all appropriate. Large art squares are now made in early American designs. Choose electric fixtures which resemble old-fashioned oil lamps. Ruffied curtains at every window are charming and look well from the outside. Maple furniture, chintz hangings and braided or hooked rugs are delightful in a colonial bedroom. Helped When a School Girl "Eight years ago I went through a bad sickness. I was not getting my strength back as quickly as I should; An old lady told me about Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. Mother bought a bottle and soon I was back in school feeling fine. I am now taking care of an aged grand· mother. If I am nervous, rundown or cannot sleep I will use it" .-Miss Anna Belle Rasey, 252 Chestnut St., Geneva, Ohio. "Your Medicine Is the Best" "I am taking the Vegetable Compound now and it is helping me. I am gaining in weight, I sleep well and enjoy life fine. I have tried all kinds of medicine but I find yours is the best. It did me more good than any I have ever takeo".Mrs. W. R. Duckett, Franklin, Kentucky. 27 ' These Women Found· Help at the Change oF LiFe ~'When I first started in the Change of Life I was so ner· vous and sick that I could neither do my work at home or hold any other employment. I took quite a few bottles of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and it put me on my feet. It relieved dizziness and nervousness. Since taking it I have been doing my own housework and working out in another home. I feel better than I have in five years. I recommend the Vegetable Compound to girls and women". -Miss Jenieve Harper, 211 South Hancock St., Louisville, Ketttrtcky. "I lost a son 21 years old. My nerves were so bad I could hardly eat or sleep for three months afterward. I am 49 years old and in the Change. Your Vegetable Compound helped me very much. My nerves are better. My appetite is not very good yet but I sleep better".-Mrs. Winifred Mona· han, 2.280 8th Ave., New York, N. Y. "Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound has helped all my family. We always took it. I was rundown and nervous and had hot spells awful bad sometimes. I took the Vege· table Compound again and it helped me. It puts pep into me and makes work easy. What an improvement our gleaming white sink is, with its shining · chrome plated faucets and its high, sanitary legs. The latest idea however, is to utilize this valuable space under the sink. The cabinet sink illustrated is built as a complete unit. That is, all shelves and drawers are completed and all piping and faucets in place, needing only a few hours of plumbing labor to make the connections. This sink is porcelain-enamel and comes in white or colors, with single or double drainboards. All models have deep drawers for utensils. Some models have a pastry board and a ventilated bin for vegetables. These new ca~inet sinks are sanitary, commodious, not too expensive and should be popular. If you buy any white sink, insist upon the acid resisting kind. A cheaper sink will stain and be an eyesore. Better pay a little more and get a reliable product. Perhaps you would prefer one of the new monel meta~ sinks. They. are acid-resisting, non-tarnishing, and easy to clean. Have a carpenter build drawers and closets underneath; 29 HO-USEHOLD HINTS Cut flowers will last longer if you put salt in the water. Clip the stems and change the water every day. Don't neglect leaking faucets. They cost money because they waste water. To remove the shine from woolen suits and skirts, make a solution of 1 tablespoonful borax to 1 quart of water. Sponge the shiny parts with this solution. Press on the wrong side while damp. Put 1 tsp. ammonia in a large bowl of water. Leave it in the room over night and it will remove the odor of fresh paint or cigarette smoke. When hanging curtains put a thimble over the end of the rod. This prevents snagging your curtains. If you want candles to burn longer on the dinner table, keep them in the refrigerator several hours before using. They do not melt a~ fast. To remove finger marks from furniture, rub lightly with a cloth dipped in kerosene. Wipe with a dry cloth, then use furniture polish. If your windows stick, rub paraffin on the ropes; If you want to save part of a can of paint, pour paraffin over it and it will not harden. GET A FREE SACHET Useful to place among your linens or lingerie. Delightfully fragrant. Use co11pon inside the back cover of this book. 30 A Very Interesting Letter_ from Our M·ail Bag "As a <;hild I was always small and lacked the pep and energy most children are filled with. At the age of 10 years I weighed only 50 pounds. When I came to womanhood mother started giving me Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. She was worried about me because I had backache, bilious attacks and weak kidneys. Thanks to the Vegetable Compound I came through all right and began to gain weight and strength. Mother watched me closely and kept me from overexertion and excitement. All the· time I continued taking the Vegetable Compound. At the age of 14 I had a good appetite, had grown in weight and strength. The children used to say • She can lick any boy in school'. "I used to help mother around the house and help father in the field. I felt well until I worked in a factory where I had to stand 9 hours a day. I became pale and rundown and had terrible pains at my periods. An old man who used to be a doctor ran a drug store near where I lived. He recommended your Vegetable Compound so I took three bottles and soon regained my color and pep. "I am married now and have three children. They are all perfect physically and in the best of health. I had no trouble at childbirth. I give your Vegetable Compound credit for building me up for the ordeal of bearing and raising children. Full-text | \ 1 L£tL ! FIX UP THE . HOUSE KEEP YOUR HUSBAND'S LOVE If Pep is What You Lack ... take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound Mrs. C. J. Brantley Route #1. Manor, Georgia The best man in the world would get tired of an irritable, complaining wife. If you are nervous and rundown, you cannot do your share to make a happy home. Take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound regularly for a while. Mrs. C.). Brantley of Manor, Georgia, says, "I have been married eight ~onths . I felt weak and tired and suffered periodically. Your Vegetable Compound has helped me wonderfully. I am glad to tell others about it." "My Husband says I Am My Old Self Again, says Mrs. Barbara Spears of Akron, Ohio. "I was tired and all in. Had no appetite and no pep. Your Vegetable Com_!)ound eliminated that awful tired feeling". Your husband deserves a happy, rested wife. Don't let the cares of your home or the demands of the baby wear you out. This medicine quiets quivering nerves- improves the appetite- encourages normal s~eep. Life will seem worth living again. Millions Available to Home Owners under the Federal Housing Act The government of the United States will loan responsible people $2,000 (or less) to fix up their homes. How Loans Will Be Paid By monthly installments, the exact terms to be arranged between the borrower and the lending agency. All loans must be paid in five years. Small loans may run one or two years. Interest rate is about 5 per cent; What If the Borrower Cannot Pay? When installments payments are 60 days overdue, the local agency will notify the National Housing Administration; The National Housing Administration will investigate and take steps to collect. 1 IIIII How to Improve an Old House If you happen to own an old house-and many of us do-it can be made .more attractive and more comfortable by the addition of a few modern improvements; Such improvements should add to the re-sale value of your property. Prices for both laFor and materials vary so much -in different sections of the country, that it is unwistfto estimate the cost. However, many of these suggestions can be carried out for $50.00 or less. Install a modern tile bathroom, complete with shower. Add a bay window to enlarge your dining or living room. Install a lavatory on the first floor for convenience. Per-haps you have a deep closet which can be utilized. Build a cement walk around the house or a driveway from street to garage. R~·roof with fire resisting shingles. Put storm windows on the north and east sides of your house or weatherstrips on all doors and windows. Lay a hardwood floor in the hall and oak treads on the stairs; Cut in a new window in the hall or a dormer in the roof. Install French doors between the living room and dining room or between living room and hall. This will save on 2 How to Improve and Old House ••• Conti1zued heating in cold weather and promote privacy without a "cooped up" feeling. Change all electric fixtures to modern ones. Provide more outlets for lamps and appliances. Build a porch. If you have a porch, screen it for greater comfort. Build a sun parlor or convert an open porch into a sun parlor. Be sure it is on the sunny side of the house. (Some are not.) Install a new kitchen sink or a sink and tub combination with chromium faucets which will not tarnish; Build a linen closet and a broom closet. Build brick steps at the front entrance and set out shrubs to improve the approach to the house. Paper and paint all rooms which need it. Insulate the pipes leading across the cellar, also furnace or boiler to conserve heat. finish an extra room or two in the attic, using wall board which saves the confusion of plastering. Build a fireplace for the living room. Reshingle the house on the outside, right over your old clapboards. It will be several years before the new effect wears off and stain is 'cheaper than paint. "WONDERFUL RESULTS" "I took your medicine at the age of 13 and several times since. I am taking it now for a tonic and it certainly gives wonderful results. I have a good appetite and good color. I am in good spirits and feel well and strong."-Mrs. Bennie Hanson, Hawley, Minnesota. 3 Seven Ways to Make a Room Look Larger L Use a plain light paper or light tinted -walls. 2; Have the woodwork exactly the color of the paper. 3; Use a monotone rug; Avoid large, emphatic figures; Have the rug fairly large. A wide border of bare wood makes a room look smaller. 4; Avoid massive furniture. Avoid rpcking chairs; 5. Set the furniture flat against the walt Nothing across a corner. Keep the center of the room clear. 6. Place· a mirror on the wall where it will reflect a window or door and so help to suggest a vista. 7; Ifyour room has small wooden doors, substitute single French glass doors. The sense of spaciousness which results will compensate you for the small panes you have to wash. Had No Pep Whatsoever "I am 26 years old. I had a nervous breakdown; Was very irritable, quick tempered and had a poor appetite and no pep whatsoever; I went home on a visit and told my mother about my condition. Right away she recommended Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound; So far I have taken five bottles of it, and I feel much better. My nerves are better and I have good color. I shall keep on with the medicine until I am completely well".- Mrs. Orville Plummer, 614 Romulo St., Los Angeles, California. Are You In the Late Forties? Do you suffer from hot flushes, nervousqess, sleeplessness, palpitation and other annoying symptoms of the Change? Let Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound help you over this critical period. ' Mrs. Maggie Clutter of Marlinton, West Virginia, says: "I am 49 years old. I always had an ambition to work~ Last August while working in a boarding house I became exhausted~ My nerves were bad and I could not sleep. I ached all over and I had smothering spells on account of the Change. One day I fainted and was taken to the hospital. After I came home my daughter immediately started me taking Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. In two weeks I was back to work and am now cooking in a restaurant. Your medi· cine gave me strength and made me sleep better. I recommend it highly". Are You Weak After Childbirth? This medicine will help you to regain your strength• It quiets quivering nerves, improves the appetite, gives you more pep. Mrs. Leo M. Bolinger of Kennard, Indiana, says: "I am 23 years old. Ever since I was thirteen I have suffered with cramps. Before and after the birth of my little son I was very weak and my back bothered me. A friend of mine told me to take your medicine and I gave it a trial. I am much better and I am going to coa. tinue taking it. I hope every woman who feels as I did will take the Vegetable Compound. It strengthened me". Mrs. Royal A. Hawken of Langdon, North Dakota, says: "Since the birth of my baby I have been troubled with a pain in my side. I felt tired and weak, didn't have any appetite and spent many a wakeful night. My mother recommended your Vegetable Compound. I have taken three bottles so far. My appetite is good. I sleep well and am able to do my work. It has helped the pain, too". 5 Lydia E. Pinkham's Tablets Relieve Perioclic Pain • • • These Letters Prove lt. Reac/ Them Carefully. "I had a tired, nervous, numb feeling. At times I was weak and dizzy. Every month I suffered so that 1 had to stay in bed two or three days. Lydia E. Pinkham's Tablets gave me great relief".-Mrs. A lice Tate, ~716 P. St., N. Jr~"., Washington, District of Columbia. "Since I took Lydia E. Pinkham's Tablets I feel like a new girl. No more of that dizzy tired feeling and nervousness. I can stay on my feet without suffering so terribly and without having so much backache. No other medicine helped me so much."-Miss Celeste Masrten, Route #1, Pipestone, Minnesota. "At my period I had awful pains in my sides and back. I saw Lydia E. Pinkham's Tablets on display at the drug store and they relieved the discomfort".-Mrs. Charles C. Dils, 10 N. Antioch St., Dayton, Ohio. "Your Tablets are absolutely worth advertising. Every month I thought I was going to die with pain. I used to be in bed at least one day, sometimes two days. A friend of mother's told me about your medicine, after I had tried almost everything else. I took the Tablets and was greatly relieved. Now I would not know I was menstruating".- Mrs. Gertrude Heiser, 1002 W. Huntington St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. TRY THEM NEXT MONTH Are you one of the many women who suffer every month from periodic pain, backache and headache? Why don't you give these Tablets a chance to help you.? Chocolate coated. Packed in small purse size bottles. Trhil size, 2 5 cents. At all good dmg stores. 6 . What is Wrong with this Room? , First, it is confusing. Before I took the Vegetable Compound, I suffered from headaches, back trouble, pains in my legs and consti· pation. Now I eat 100% better. A Textile Worker "I am a textile worker. I was rundown. Had such pain in my side and right leg that I could not bear my weight on the ground• I used to lie down two hours every day. A neighbor recommended Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I took three bottles and I feel so good I have almost forgotten I ever had a pain. I feel like a different person and I recommend this medicine to women in run·down condition like I was" .-Mrs. C. L. Haynes, 61 Washington Ave., Schoolfield, Virginia. A Mill Worker "I am 23 years old and a mill worker. I used to suffer with sore. ness, aches and swelling before my period. Your Vegetable Com• pound eased the pains".-Mrs. C. E. Four bottles of the Vegetable Compound relieved all my troubles".-Evel)•n Kelley, Pawtucket, Rhode Island. 8 Let's Put Up a ShelF No house can have ·too many shelves. Have you a reed fern stand? The braces for the legs may be used to support a light shelf which is handy for magazines. Isn't there a corner somewhere that can be converted into a closet for the broom, mop, vacuum cleaner and dust pan? A shelf at the top will hold soap pow~er, polishes and cleaning supplies. Nervous-? Runclown? Take LYDIA E. PINKHAM'S VEGETABLE COMPOUND Liquid or Tablet Form 9 Lydia E. Pinkham1 s PILLS FOR CONSTIPATION Lydia E. Pinkham's Pills for Con· st!pation are chocolate coated, inex· pensive and dependable. Keep them in your medicine chest. The cost is trifling-only about one cent per dose .. You may safely give them to boys and girls over ten years of age. THIS WOMAN RECOMMENDS THEM "I have recommended your Vegetable Compound to many mothers. They also use it for their young daughters and find it helpful. · "I am now using your Pills for Constipation and they are very good. I will never be without this medicine.'-Mrs. Mary D'Onofrio, 8130 Dayion Street, Detroit, Michigan. LYDIA E. P-INKHAM'S MEDICINES Are sold by dt'uggists generally Keep them in your medicine chest. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound at the Change of Life. I saw it advertised for :weak and rundown people. It helped me wonderfully, when I had a dragging feeling and pain in my back. Today I take care of chickens and do some farm work. I sleep fine and feel stronger every day. I can work better than ~ver. I recommend the Vegetable Compound very heartily."Jennie E. Westeine, Cleveland Ave., Mizpah, New Jersey. " It Helped My Nerves " "I had a nervous breakdown. I used to lie down every day. Each month I suffered with pain in my back and legs. My Aunt took your Vegetable Compound. It sure helped her so she told me to take it. It helped my nerves and all my pains. I feel better now than I have for the last year".-Mrs. Lttla Wilson, 1035 Churchman Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana. 11 IF Your Home Is Small Many modern women are keeping house in rooms which their grandmothers would have called "not big enough to swing a cat in". And yet we are surprisingly comfortable .in them. We have learned to eliminate the non-essentials. A place to eat and sleep-comfort for our leisure and a bit of beauty-aren't these the fundamentals of any home? •The 111odern apartment must be simple and compact in its furnishings. The cellar and the attic-"clutter holes,. of a previous generation-have vanished. Storage space is limited. Furniture must do double duty. The Studio Couch If someone must sleep in the living room, the studio couch or davenport is the answer; Some of them may be used as a double bed or twin beds, as you prefer. Most of them have space for bedding• Upholstered in colorful and substantial fabrics, with pillows to match, a studio couch is an attractive piece of living room furniture. The latest models have arms; The Governor Winthrop Se-cretary Its height lends dignity to your room; The desk space is ample for the family needs with plenty of space for stationery, account books, etc. The glassed-in shelves above hold a surprising num,ber of books. The drawers beneath may be used for table linen, bed linen or clothing if necessary; . Have You a Trundle Box? Like the old fashioned trundle-bed, it slides under your own bed out of sight. It is simply a stout ~ · lboonxg ,a p1p froooxti mdaeteepl,y a5n df eaett !u -,~.,"U~L--=~'.,--,~ ~~~~~;~l least 6 inches narrower - than your bed. It is mounted on castors and should have two strong handles on the front to aid in pulling it forward. Have your carpenter or handy man measure the space under your bed carefully so that your box will roll under easily and will be concealed by the bedspread. Such a box provides storage space for blankets, comforters, and heavy clothing in summer. In winter, it will hold summer clothing, porch pillows and other things not then in use. The Electric Sewing Machine If you sew much, an electric machine is a great convenience. Choose a table model which will hold the telephone or a reading lamp. Such a table may also be used beside the bed or as a small serving table in the dining room; Miss Jean Ammann, 1514 Jefferson Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, says: · "1. work in the office of the Electric Company. Serving at least part of the meals in the kitchen saves many steps for the busy housewife. A complete breakfast nook may be purchased ready to install. It is desirable to place it at a window, though this is not necessary. An electric outlet will enable you to make toast or coffee right at the table. If your nook is not at a window, an electric wall light with a pretty shade is cosy. It may be installed when the outlet is put in at slight additional expense. A breakfast set of four graceful chairs and a drop-leaf porcelain top table may fit your kitchen better than the breakfast nook. Unfinished sets are inexpensive and may be painted in any desired color scheme. Most of them have a handy drawer for .cutlery. , · If your space is very limited, have your carpenter install a drop leaf table approximately 24" x 30" which will fold down against the wall when not in use. One end is fastened by hinges to the wall. It may be stained or painted. With two chairs ·to match, it solves the breakfast problem for a young couple, and there is room for a baby's high chair at the end of the table. DO YOU FEEL SO NERVOUS THAT YOU WANT TO SCREAM? 18 • ... That Bedroom Closet-Continued A mirror door is a feature of the master bedroom in many new houses. These mirrors, finished in white, walnut or mahogany, may: be pur- '.) chased for about two dollars, and are easily attached to any door. PINKHAM'S SANATIVE WASH ~ ; ~ For Feminine Douches • ; ~ Be Careful of Your Stairs A. d istressing number of deaths and in juries are caused every year by people falling downstairs. I have ~!so recommended it to many other women" .-Mrs. L. ]. Loesch, Route l'Vo. 1, Box 44, Irondale, Missouri. A Word to Young Mothers Mrs; Jas.
