A · WATKINS STORE AT YOUR DOOR
The Story of
Watkins Products
S. HORTLY AFTER the close of the
Civil War, a Liniment was placed
upon the market which · became
widely known for its -remarkable ability
to relieve aches and pains.
This Liniment was compounded and
bottled by a resident of Winona, Minnesota,
Mr. J. R. Watkins, according
to his special formula which he had
developed.
Mr. Watkins at first supplied this
Liniment chiefly to his friends and
neighbors. Soon, however, these
friends began telling their friends
about it, and Mr. Watkins found the
demand for his Linment growing
greater day by day.
He was thus induced to abandon his
other pursuits and devote his entire_
time to making and suppl-ying "Watkins
Liniment./' In 1868--the same
year General Grant was ·elected President
of the United States-Mr. Watkins
founded the business which today
bears his name.
-The start was small, but the principle
behind the business was sound,
and a substantial growth set in from
the very beginning. Mr. Watkins believed
in quality before all else . . And
second only to quality came SERVICE
to his customers.
It was in the interest of service that
Mr. Watkins developed the plan of
selling, by wagon, from home to home.
Mr. Watkins was the originator orf
this method of selling.
He felt that this method would
mean a tremendous saving of time fo-r
his customers. He saw, moreover,
that it would enable them to buy his
product at the lowest possible price
because it eliminated the wholesaler's
profit and other extra expenses involved
in the usual method of distribution.
Throughout the more than half a
century that has passed siru!e the
founding of this business, we have
never deviated from the original principles
laid down by our revered found-
. er, J . R. Watkins. _New products have
been added from time to time but always
before putting out a product we
have made SURE it was RIGHT. Watkins
quality MUST. be maintained.
That is why people have come to
have such great confidence in Watkins
Products. They-know they can depend
on any product bearing the name of
The J. R. W:~tkins Qompany. There
are more than twenty million ·satisfied
users of Watkins Products today!
During these many years, Mr. Watkins'
ideal of service has been adhered
to rigidly. · Watkins service has not
only been MAINTAINED-it has been
BROADENED. Today there are about

"It's the result that counts,"
and certainly this is true of
baked goods. Nothing is more
exasperating than a pan of biscuits
or cake that fails to raise.
Of course, there are many reasons
why baked foods don't always
raise as you expect them
to, but it is safest to insure the
results of your work by using a
baking powder of known reliability.

The Use of Beauty Aids
Throughout the ages of history,
from the more or less well-known
Garden of Eden, to the present day,
poets have sung of Beauty-beauty
principally exemplified by "lovely
woman." Surely every woman should
live up to expectations and be as
lovely as it is possible for her to be.
Especially has the woman of today
no excuse for being unlovely.. Nature
was not meant to be absolutely unassisted
in a beauty way, otherwise all
of our present day aids to loveliness
and its preservation would never have
been discovered.
Few of us, indeed, grow into really
superlative beauties, but every woman
has her good points. In fact some of
them may be as yet undiscovered, but
they are there and should be emphasized.
Make the most of your good
points, whether many or few; and the
bad points, if they cannot be corrected,
can at least be made to seem inconspicuous.
Your good points should be guarded
as your very life, for on their care
and preservation will depend much of
your enjoyment of life. If, for instance,
you are gifted with lovely
hair, remember that the most certain
way to enhance its loveliness is to
keep it clean. One's "crowning glory"
-whether worn long or trigly bobbed
-remains a "glory" only when it is
shampooed well and frequently.
Your hair, whether or not it is one
of your good ;points, is bound to be
healthier, fluff1er, and more "fixible"
when it is clean. "Cleanliness first"
is also the rule for cultivating the
complexion. Plenty of water, and
pure, mild soap, are absolutely necessary,
as well as the various crealJI.'l
and lotions, each of which has its own
particular use.
Cosmetics were meant to be used as
an aid to nature. It is quite permissible
to "paint the lily" (especially if
she be a pale, drooping flower), but
let us endeavor to do it as artistically
as possible, remembering that we are
striving to assist, not caricature,
Nature!
Using Face Powder Effectively.
Garda Face Powder, when properly

The secret of successhltly apJ>l;ing

The
Story of Garda
F AR AWAY IN SUNNY ITALY lies a
beautiful lake whose waters, according to
legend, were at one time thought to be
perfumed. People said that in the fall when
the flowers disappeared, a princess named
Garda picked them, in full bloom, by moonlight,
and placed them in the waters of the
lake. Thus the lake was called Garda, and the
princess became a symbol of grace and beauty
in womanhood.

Sweet Lavender from Brittany; Ylang Ylang

Here indeed is the master
achievement of a master per fumer!
This wondrous new odor
is a bouquet of chosen fragrances
gathered from the far cor ners

Delicious-irresistible!
Garda Toilet Water 1s popular
not only f or the bath, but is pref
elTed by many who do not wish
a too highly concentrated perfume.
A few drops on the skin
r efresh and invigorate. The
Garda fragrance is PxquisitP
smoothness of the fabric itself. The
natural color, the rosy tinting of the
cheeks, will be subtly evident like the
lovely rich tones that seem to spring
from beneath the sheen of the velvet.
Garda Face Powder carries with it
that faint, irresistible fragrance that
is characteristic of charm; it stays on
unusually lcng, and last of all, but
very important, it blends marvelously
with the skin, never being too evident.
Be particularly caroful in the selection
of the tint that you are t~t use
in your face powder. If possible try
each variety of coloring to find out
which is the best suited to your particular
complexion. Garda Face
Powder comes in four distinct tints:
Natural, Flesh, Brunette, and White.
The natural tint is suitable for more
skins, perhaps, than any other shading
of face powder. Some pale skins look
well with powder a bit darker than
the complexion, and plenty of rouge
to give richness and color. On the
other hand, some darker complexions
look best with a powder much lighter
in tone. For instance, brunette powder
looks well on a blue-eyed and blackhaired
per son. So it is well to observe
that there oan be no bard and fast
tule applied to the selection of a face
powder tint.
For the Sun-Browned Outdoor Girl.
A tint wondrously rich and creamy
is obtainable where the famous Watkins
Brown-Skin Face Powder is used.
While this powder is particularly advisable
for those with complexions of
a decidedly brunette tone, it will impart
tone and richness to milady of
the slightly pa1id or sallow skin. This
powder is endowed with a clinging
. fragrance, not too evident. It is
also particularly fine-grained, and de-cidedly
adhesive. .
The Proper Use of Rouge.
Garda Rouge is indispensable
Packed in a convenient little box and
furnished with its own particular
little puff, it is the utmost in rouge.
This cosmetic may be had in two
shades, medium and dark, and it is
well to choose the one which will do
the most to heighten the natural
coloring in the cheeks.
There are times when the system is
in especially good condition and Garda
Cream has been massaged into thp

to the skin is Garda Cream.
It contains an ingredient famed
throughout France for its healing
and beautifying properties.
Garda Cream forms an ideal
base for Garda Face Powder. As
a night cream or massage it acts
as a tissue food-softens and
whitens the skin. Perfumed, of
course, with the distinctive Garda
fragrance.
Smart women the world over
know just when and where a
touch of rouge may be used to
advantage. Garda Rouge, in
cake form and with its dainty
puff, is quickly applied, adheres
perfectly and harmonizes beautifully.
The dainty container, high
quality of ingredients and the

advisable. But there are other v.mes,
and perhaps these are more frequent,
when you are tired and dispirited;
then a touch of rouge applied well up
on the cheeks and-very lightly-at
th~ outer corners of the eyelids, will
brmg a sparkle to the eyes and brighten
u.p the whole countenance.
It IS absolute folly to criticise the
use of rouge. Every sensible man and
woman now understands that there is
no more harm in a touch of red
powder, or rouge, than there is in
white powder on a shiny nose. And
who can object to a dainty touch of
powder?
In the use of rouge, however, there
are three things on which particular
emphasis must be placed. First of all
when applying the rouge, rub it i~
well, with a rotary motion, upward
and outward, with the grain of the
skin. Your cheeks will have the glow
of perfect health. Second-tone down
the rouge with face powder to a rosy
pue that is natural and pleasing with
your <>wn particular cype of beauty.
Then, before retiring, remember to
cleanse the pores of the skin with
Garda . Cold Cream. Washing the

Rouge, like all other cosmetics,
sh_ould be us~d sensibly, and this implies
moderatiOn. Str1ve to aid Nature,
not to outdo her.
Personal Daintiness.
There can be no one quality in a
woman so admired, envied and desired
as tpersonal daintiness. And one of
the most certain ways of obtaining
and preserving that daintiness is the
care and cleanliness of milady's person.
Excessive perspiration is the
enemy of daintiness, and yet how
many women seem to be afflicted with
this annoyance. What they must add
to their toilet necessities is a reliably
harmless but effective preventativ~.
And Watkins Deodorant Powder fills
this need.
It is no longer necessary to have
go:wns. ruined by excessive armpit perspiratiOn,
or to dread summer as a
season of impaired daintiness. Bathe

kins Deodorant Powder. This Deodorant
Powder may be used directly
on the part affected, or sprinkled on
the undergarments. It is really surprisingly
effective, stops the misery,
and the damage, as well as the odor
of excessive perspiration of the armpits,
hands, feet, etc. If this powder
is used faithfully, and this means
each day, just as milady uses her
face powder, unnaturally excessive
perspiration will be kept under control;
and the skin under the arms will
be as dry and yet as fresh as any
other part of the body.

in the shoes before putting them on
and notice how, when you take off
these same shoes later in the day,
the unpleasant odor, which is caused
by the action of the perspiration on
the leather, has vanished altogether.
Care of the Hands.
The hands are quick to show signs
of age. Have you not often seen
women that are otherwise youthful in
appearance, with hands that are
withered and old? The fact that the
hands are almost the first members
of the body to show age is easily explainable
when we realize that we
wash the hands more frequently (and
usually with less care) than any other
part of the bo~y. Thus the natural
oils of the body are removed. More
creams and hand lotions should be
used, to supply the oils removed by
too frequent ablutions.
At night, bathe the hands in warm
(not hot) water with Watkins Vegetable
Oil Soap. Rinse in tepid water
to which you have adde'd some plain
uncooked oatmeal, or rolled oats. This
makes a soothing, milky liquid which
softens and whitens the skin. Then
rub in Watkins Cold Cream or Garda
Cream, especially around the knuckles,
at the wrists and tips of the fingers.
Apply the cream generously, and if
you have an old pair of loose gloves,
draw these on to protect the bed
linen. The gloves help to keep the
cream on the hands during the night,
and next morning the skin will be soft
and supple. Persist in this treatment
and you will be rewarded with smooth
white hands.
In the winter time, when your
hands chap easily, and you have them
in and out of water a great deal,
keep a bottle of Watkins Face Cream,

Watkins Cold
Cream
Every household should be supplied
with a pure cold cream of known
quality. It has many purposes, aside
from its beautifying effects. Cold
Cream is a skin preservative, cleansing
more deeply than mere soap and
water, and providing the oils which
prevent that dry, wrinkled look
of the complexion. Watkins Cold
Cream, wonderfully soothing and comforting,
is also recommended for r:hafing
of the skin and irritation, for
chapped lips and hands and any raw
or tender surface. Excellent as a preventive
of or relief from sunburn and
windburn.
Watkins Vanishing
Cream
The Vanishing Cream (so-called
because it is readily absorbed by the
skin and "vanishes" into the pores)
is one of the newer cosmetics which
women have hailed with genuine
enthusiasm. Watkins Vanishing
Cream is the ideal base for powder;
in fact, face powder should always
be applied over vanishing cream to
give the proper velvet tone to the
skin. This cream is delightfully
cool to the touch and leaves not the
least trace of stickiness or "shine,"
as it is absolutely greaseless. You
will be surprised at the soft freshness
of your skin after application
of this really magical cream.

Watkins Wistaria Cream is an
unfailing protection against
windburn and sunburn. Quickly
dries into the skin, making the
skin pleasingly soft. A liquid
cream, delightfully fragrant and
wonderfully effective.
Watkins Cosmetic Lotion is
fine for chapped hands and
roughness of the skin. It is
also especially good for tan, sunburn
and windburn. Keep a bottle
always handy; it is useful
at all seasons of the year.
Cosmetic Lotion, or Wistaria c.~eam
(all liquid lotions) in the kitchen,
and use several times a day. Just
a few drops on the palm of the
band, then rubbed in well all over
the band, will prevent cha,~.>ping. Especially
after washing dishes you
should use a liquid cream on the
bands.
Then, too, it is essential to protect
the hands when going out. For this
purpose, apply Watkins Wistaria
Cream, or if you prefer it, Watkins
Cosmetic Lotion. The latter is especially
good after exposure to the
elements, and quickly gives relief to
chapped hands, face or lips. Watkins
Wistaria Cream is especially pleasant
to use (really refreshing, in fact)
and it has the very desirable effP.ct
of whitening and softening the skin.
Not only the bands, but the ar:ns
and shoulders, too, should come in
for a share of this treatment, at
least occasionally. Of course, mila,,y
does not want her bands and arnts
to form an unpleasant study in c•>n·
trasts: the bands white, soft and «1-
together lovely, while the arms }ire
reddened and rough. So, perh1 ps
every other day or so, apply Y< •ur
cold cream to the arms and shoulders.
The elbows, too, need frequent
applications of cold cream.
Then when the occasion presen~s
itself and milady's charming party
frock is donned, she will not be uncomfortably
conscious of hands, arms
or shoulders. Certainly nothing is so
conducive to naturalness and charm
as the consciousness that one's appearance
is impossible to criticise.
And having the skin in a good condition
is really half the battle.
Care of the Nails.
Every woman should try to give
at least an hour a week to the care
of her nails. Surely this isn't too
much time when one considers how
long and unceasingly we use our
hands every day. Manicure the nails
carefully once a week, and give them
five minutes attention every dayfiling
if necessary, pushing back the
cuticle, cleaning under the nails, and
polishing off with the buffer or a
piece of chamois skin.
Any woman can learn to manicure
her own nails and will be able to do
it skillfully in a short while. It is

The nails, as well as other parts of
the body, need oil, else they will become
brittle and break. Soak the
nails in warm olive oil, if they are
extremely brittle, and rub in Watkins
Cold Cream or Watkins Garda

cuticle is kept soft with cream and
pushed back from the nail, you won't
suffer with hang nails.
Garda Nail Polish will help you
to keep your nails looking healthy,
pink and shiny. Use the polish about
twice a week-always after you
manicure your nails, and once in the
week between manicures. On other
days, rubbing the nails on the palm

Garda lustre. You want only
a pleasing polish-it is considered
rather poor taste to have one's finger
tips decorated with too brilliant
a glow.
Making the Most of Your Hair.
Perhaps milady is gifted with hair
that is veritably a "crown of glory,"
and then again she may not be so
fortunate. In either case she must
remember that it is cleanliness that
counts. The frequent shampoo is a
prime factor in the care of the hair.
Once a month is not too often to
launder one's tresses. Heads of light
colored hair should be washed even
more frequently (every two or three
weeks). Then, too, there is no single
item of beauty culture like a good,
energetic shampoo for making one
feel "like a new woman."
This invigorating feeling is probably
due to the scalp massage which
all of us include more or less in our
shampoos. The feeling of newness
afterwards is in direct proportion to
the amount of scalp massage which
we include in the operation. It is
not necessary to rub so vigorously
as to give oneself a headache. Start
the massage with the thumbs placed
together at the back of the head,
then massage the scalp gently between
the two first fingers. Massage
the entire scalp in this fashion and
notice how "tingly" clean your head
feels. Blood circulation is stimulated,
and thus the hair growth is promoted.
This massage treatment is
invaluable with milady's shampoo,

but a bit of skillful rubbing any time
when the scalp feels tight and tired
is really quite beneficial. Be sure
to use the soft tips of your fingers.
Soaps, some of them, are much too
strong for use in washing the hair.
One should secure a really good dependable
shampoo. And that just
describes Watkins Cocoanut Oil
Shampoo. It is highly beneficial because
it is a scalp cleanser and invigorator;
it works easily and quickly
into a rich, creamy lather; and
finally it rinses off readily in clear
water. Watkins Cocoanut Oil Shampoo
should be applied after the hair
has been moistened with water. Use
only a small quantity at a time (one
to three teaspoonfuls is ample) and
rub well into the scalp until a rich,
creamy lather is formed. Rinse off
in warm water, twice, and finish with
a dash of cold water to close the
pores of the scalp and prevent taking'
cold.
To Correct a Double Chin.
To avoid a double chin, massage
with Watkins Cold Cream or Watkins
Garda Cream, from the base of
the throat to the chin, and on either
side as far back as the ear. Always
use an upward stroke, lifting the
flesh up and back. Wipe off the surplus
cream and apply Garda Toilet
Water as an astringent. This cuts
the grease occasioned by the use of
the cream, closes the pores, and has
a tendenoy to whiten the skin.
Toilet Water as an Astringent.
Toilet water may be used as an
astringent whenever cold cream is
used in massaging the skin.
Benefits of Massage for a Wrinkled
Neck.
A thin, wrinkled throat is a most
unlovely condition, and one that is not
easily remedied. Wrinkles are caused
by removal of the natural oils of the
skin. The fat being removed from
under it, the dry skin falls in folds
and thus the wrinkles are formed.
The responsibility for this condition
may lie in the use of the wrong kind
of soap, hard water, or perhaps some
·condition of the individual's system.
Whatever the cause, the remedy is
the same, and it has been proven
equally effective in every case when
faithfully carried out. Proper massage
with a_good, reliable cold cream,
such as Watkins Cold Cream or
Garda Cream should be the watch-

A Busy ·woman's Formula for a
Quick "Revival" of Energy.
When you are tired and the face
feels as if it were sagging, take a
basin of warm water and about three
tablespoonfuls of Watkins Toilet
Water; Rose or Lilac is particularly
good. Apply on face, hands, neck,
and throat. Pat dry quickly and then
dip little pieces of cotton batting in
the toilet water and lay them on the
closed eyelids, and rest quietly for
five minutes, lying perfectly flat on
the flat of the back. After the five
minute interval, apply a little Watkins
Vanishing Cream, or Watkins
Wistaria Cream, if you prefer it;
then a slight dusting of Watkins
Face Powder, and a touch of Garda
Rouge and you will find yourself
quite revivified.
This formula is the practice of a
woman of forty-five who is at the
head of one of the "'<ro-<•<=1: business
enterprises in New York. She has
been doing it for fifteen years-sometimes
once a day, sometimes in the
middle of a busy afternoon's heaviest
pressure of work. She remarked
once, that when she first started it
she was drawing twenty-five dollars
a week and when she couldn't find
any place to do her relaxing she
would stretch out for five minutes
on the floor of the rest room in' the
big office building where she worked.
Now drawing a salary of thirty
thousand dollars a year, she has her
own private restroom where she may
retire for five minutes, but the result
she gets is just the same.

Hints on the Use of Talcum Powder.
Talcum is wonderfully refreshing
in any of the various fragrances
manufactured by Watkins. The Garda
Talcum Powder is noted for its especial
fineness, having nearly the
smoothness of a face powder.
Talcum should always be dusted
over the body after a bath. In Turkish
bath establishments, people who are
burdened with too much fat, are
massaged with talcum powder instead
of oils which, of course, are
conducive to fat. After a warm bath,
the talcum rub tends to reduce the
flesh.
A little talcum powder sprinkled
on the hair brush and drawn through
the hair will fluff it up attractively
if you haven't time for a shampoo.
Talcu·.""\ powder is indispensable for
baby's use. All the tender little
folds and creases in the soft flesh
should be dusted with Watkins Talcum
Powder. Talc will also relieve
prickly heat and other skin irritations.
It is especially soothing and
cooling to baby's skin in the hot
Summer months. Use it freely.
The Roman Beauty Bath.
One of the most wonderful and
high priced baths that is given in
the leading beauty parlors of London
and Paris is the Roman Beauty Bath.
You may give yourself the equivalent
in your own home for a very trifling
expenditure, and there is little needed
in the way of equipment.
First, lather the body with Watkins
Vegetable Oil Soap and warm
water, sponge off quickly and dry.
Then take some Garda Cream and
rub thoroughly every portion of the
body, giving a liberal allowance of
the Cream to the backs of the
knees, the feet and ankles, elbows,
shoulders, and throat,
Having thoroughly rubbed every
part of the body with the cream,
wrap up in a ::sneet and rest for half
an hour. At the end of that time
vou will find that most of the
Cream has been absorbed by the
skin, which is in a delightfully soft,
relaxed condition. A quick spongeoff
with one of the refreshing Watkins
toilet waters, diluted with clear
water, tones up the skin, closes the
pores, and leaves one with a wondrous
feeling of exhilaration.
The combination of the softening

most satisfying effect on j&ded, tired
nerves, muddy complexions, and a
general run-down condition of the

was originated by the late Mrs. Potter
Palmer, the great social leader.
Use of Vanishing Cream.
The descriptive paragraph which
accompanies the illustration of Watkins
Vanishing Cream (on page 2.6)
tells what Vanishing Cream is and
gives general suggestions for its use.
Watkins Vanishing Cream is especially
good to use when milady is
going to a dance, and wants her skin
to stay white and smooth and
powdered all evening long. A light
coating of Watkins Vanishing Cream,
before applying the powder, acts as
a base for the powder and holds it
on. Vanishing Cream should also be
used on the hands and arms and on
the throat, before powdering, when
you are wearing short-sleeved and
low-neck dresses.
A little Watkins Vanishing Cream
rubbed into the hands helps to make
kid gloves slip on quickly, and takes
away rough, prickly fingertips that
often catch on embroidery silk when
r,ou are sewing. As the cream
'vanishes" or disappears into thi
skin immediately, it never leaves a
greasy surface.
There is no better protective cream
for the skin than Watkins Vanishing
Cream. If you freckle easily, start
early in the season-when March
winds begin to blow-and rub a little
cream over your face, dusting with
talcum, before you start off on a long
automobile ride. This is the "ounce
of prevention" method that seldom
fails to work.
And when working in the garden,
don't despise the lowly sunbonnet.
Use the protective touch of vanishing
cream and wear at least a broad
brimmed hat. The sunhat or garden
hat is not old-fashioned or out of
date~ In the smart city shops they
bring fabulous prices for countryhome
wear. You can make yourself
an attractive garden hat out of an
inexpensive straw shape (perhaos

and some craJIS of cretonne.

Special Uses for Toilet Water

The big difference between toilet
waters and perfumes lies in the fact
that the perfumes have .a greater
percentage of the fragrant oils. Toilet
waters, on the qther hand, are not
so highly concentrated. They are
refreshing, may be used oftener, and
in less sparing quantities. A few
drops of perfume sprinkled on a bit
of cotton and placed in milady's kerchief
box will keep all of her handkerchiefs
sweetly fragrant. It takes
the place of sachet powder. A delicate
suggestion of the scent which
comes from the discreet use of toilet
water on the person and in clothing,
is decidedly pleasing. But the fragrance
should always be delicate-elusive,

Toilet water is splendidly invigorating

Bright's Disease. Cannot be cured
when it has become chronic. Watkins
Diuretic Tablets will generally give
relief. Begin their use as soon as any
irregularity of the kidneys' action is
noticed and thus avoid more serious
trouble.
Bronchitis. (Cold in the Chest) Is
an inflammation of the mucous lining
of the bronchial tubes. It starts
with a bad cold in the head, followed
shortly by a burning sensation beneath
the breast bone. Breathing is
hurried and oppressed, often accompanied
by wheezing and whistling
sounds. The throat is sore.' the voice
hoarse and there is usually a dry,
bard cough. The fever is high and
pulse rapid. Watkins Laxative Pine
Tar Cough Balsam will generally
check further development of the disease
and its prompt and efficient
action will tend to prevent the disease
from developing mto either chronic
bronchitis or pneutn()nia. Watkins

Bruises. Rub the "i\fl'ected parts
thoroughly with Watkins Pain-Oleum
for several minutes then wrap up
with flannel cloths. Watkins Liniment
and Watkins Petro-Carbo Salve
will generally give satisfactory results.
Bunions. Apply Watkins Corn
Salve. Protect from pressure or friction.
Burns and Scalds. First of all exclude
air. Watkins Petro-Carbo
Salve covering every portion of the
burn, and a bandage applied will relieve
the pain; or saturate a flannel

parts frequently. If the burn is
very extensive so as to penetrate the
muscular tissues of the body, a physician
should be sent for.
Caked Breasts.-Apply Watkins
Liniment. See inflammafion of Breast.
Carbuncles. These differ considerably
from boils and generally indicate

a run-down condition of the system.
The body is apt to absorb pus and
thus the poison is carried through the
system. When carbuncles occur on
the neck, near the spine or on the
scalp, they are not only painful but
really dangerous. A carbuncle has a
larger surface than a boil and does
not ripen to a single head, but when
mature develops three or more openings
that discharge pus. Treatment:
A poultice is the best method of home
treatment until the openings appear.
Then cover with a clean, soft cloth
so as to keep the sore warm. No
other coverings are necessary at this
time. Patient should at once begin a
system of blood treatment and for
this Watkins Blood and Skin Alterative
Tonic will be found a good purifier
and tonic.
Catarrh. A very common disease
frequently ca~sed by allowing colds
to run along indefinitely, when the
disease becomes chronic. When this
stage is reached, relief will require
some time. The spring and summer
is the best time to begin a treatment.
Use Watkins Blood and Skin Alterative
Tonic, or Watkins Gen-De-CanDra
as directed and before the succeeding
fall and winter a change will
have generally resulted. If the head
is very much stuffed up, relief can be
secured by using Watkins Catarrh
Medicine or Watkins Menthol-Camphor
Ointment which are perfectly
harmless and very soothing to the
inflamed membranes.
Catarrh of the Bladder. An inflammation
of the mucous membrane lining
of the bladder. It causes painful
passage of the urine, incontinence or
retention of the urine and leads to
diabetes and more serious troubles.
Watkins Backache and Bladder Pills
are recommended as a safe, efficient
and economical remedy.
Chafing. Watkins Talcum Powder
will give relief. If the chafing has
been neglected unti·l the skin is very
raw, first apply Watkins Petro-Carbo
Salve or Watkins Fragrant Pomade.
Change of Life. Watkins Female
Tonic offers a safe refuge for this
most trying period of womanhood. Its
use will greatly lessen the severity
of symptoms, and in the great majority
of cases no other remedies will
be required. A woman who has
reached this l'eriod should carefully
regulate her diet, bathe frequently

Children should be kept in until the

of meats. He should drink
plenty of water, one or two glasses on
arising always. Women often suffer
from constipation because of female
trouble. (See Female Complaint.)
Consumption (Tul:jerculosis.) If
the disease is suspected call a physician
at once and follow out his treatment.
Persons who have a predisposition
to this disease can, by taking
:(>roper care of themselves, overcome
this tendency and attain strong physical
health. They should above all else
have fresh air in abundance at all
times and live out doors if possible,
even to the extent of sleepin~ out
doors. Remember that consumptiOn is
an infectious disease; exerc1se the
greatest care that no sputum (spit) is
allowed to fall where it can dry. Use
cloths and burn them.
Convulsions of Infants. (Spasms.)
The cause is generally to be found in
undigested food in the stomach or
worms. Fright or excessive punishment
may cause them. Undress the
child at once and wrap in blankets
wrung out of hot water, or, if convenient
put the child in a tub of warm
water up to its neck, keeping the
water constantly warm. Apply cold,
wet towel to the head. Open bowels
with an injection of warm soapy
water (a weak suds made from Watkins
Crystal Rose Soap.) After taking
the child out of the bath wrap in
warm, dry flannel blanket.
Corns. Apply Watkins Corn Salve
binding it on with a J?iece of linen

Repeat two or three nights if necessary.
Then soak the foot in hot water
for half an hour, when you can pick
the corn out with your fingers.
Coughs. (See Bronchitis, Whooping
Cough, Croup, Hoarseness, Pleurisy,
Pneumonia.) If cough does not appear
to come from any of these causes, it
is probably a variety that may have
a tendency to become chronic. If the
cough is d1"Y with a tickling sensation
in the throat or chest, Watkins
Cough Medicine will generally give
relief.
Cracked Fingers. Cleanse thoroughly

Cramps. Use Watkins Liniment internally,
according to directions and
you will not fail to get relief.
Croup. It is usually traceable to
a cold and its treatment should generally
be along the same lines with
this difference, that a child suffering
from croup should be made to vomit
and this will carry with it mucous that
has accumulated in the windpipe. If
this is not carried away, a membrane
is apt to form, closing the windpipe
and causing death by suffocation. If
there is danger of this, prepare Watkins
Liniment the same as for diphtheria
and give a dose every twenty
minutes until relieved. Also bathe
the neck with clear LiniF ~nt. Watkins
Menthol-Camphor Oin+,nent or Watkins
Mustard Ointmen' are splendid
applications to rub into the chest for
colds and croup. A free bowel movement
should be induced by a few doses
of Watkins Lax-Tone or Watkins
Laxative Wafers.
Cuts and Wounds. Watkins PetroCarbo
Salve is healing and destroys
disease germs. An application of Watkins
Liniment will generally give relief
and a plaster of Watkins Stick
Salve will protect the wound and aid
in healing.
Dandruff. Shampoo once a week
with Watkins Shampoo Jelly and
apply to the scalp Watkins Dandruff
Remover and Scalp Tonic once a day,
rubbing it thoroughly into the scalp
until the dandruff bas disappeared.
Debility. Debility may follow illness
or mental strain caused by
worry or too much study. The system
must be helped to assimilate food.
Watkins Blood and Skin Alterative
Tonic or Watkins Sarsaparilla will be
found most bene1 • ..:1al in toning up the
system.
Delayed Menses. As a rule this
trouble is due to some constitutional
weakness rather than to any defect
in the sexual system. Bring the girl's
bodily health up to normal sta ~ dard
and the menses will appear. A course
of treatment using Watkins Female
Tonic is the best possible treatment
for this ailment.
Diabetes. Indicatea by a persistent
excessive discharge of uriPe. Use
Watkins Diuretic Tablets, or Watkins
Backache and Bladder Pills
Diarrhoea. (Dysentery, Flux, Summer
Complaint.) Dysentery usually
begins like an ordinary attack of
diarrhoea and if \\atkins Liniment
is given promptly the bloody discharges
that are characteristic of this disease
may generally be avoided. Watkins
Lax-Tone will be found a most
efficient aid to the treatment if taken
at first .to remove any c'ffending substance
from the bowels a11d then followed
with Watkins Lini.nent. The
patient should be kept in bed and
warm and quiet. In bad cases the
bowels should be washed out with
warm, soapy water, using Watkins
Crystal Rose Soap, two or three times
daily. Warm applications to the abdomen
give great relief. A bag of hot
salt or a mustard plaster is good.
During convalescence the abdomen
should be protected by a flannel bandage
and the diet should be light and
nutritious, avoiding greasy and solid
foods.
Diphtheria. (See Sore Throat.) If
throat shows white patches call a
physician immediately. Until the
physician arrives gargle the throat
with Watkins Liniment.
Discolored Urine. (See Bladder Inflammation.)
Disease of the Blood. Characterized
by physical weariness, loss of appetite,
lassitude, or depression. Frequently
the conditions have been of long
standing before they were noticed by
the patient. Owing to the obstinate
nature of these diseases time will be
required to effect relief but persistent
use of Watkins Sarsaparilla will
usually give the desired results. It
will be advisable frequently to follow
with Watki- s Lax-Tone or Watkins
Laxative Wafers. For all deep seated
or inherited cases of blood disease such
as scrofula or eczema a persistent use
of Watkins Blood and Skin A1terative
Tonic is a most efficient remedy. Much
can be accomplished by a general
course in dieting and outdoor exercise.
Diseases of the Skin. If the disease
is manifest as nettlerash, eczema, erysipelas
or any of these diseases, find
them under the proper headings in
this book. If none of these appear to
be the cause the trouble will probably
be due to some impurity in the blood.
A persistent course of Watkins Blood
and Skin Alterative Tonic will generally
be found beneficial. Watkins

COUGH BALSAM
Truly a favorite medicine for
coughs and colds. Freedom from
coughs and colds, and serious
dangers attending and resulting
from them, is mostly a matter of
avoiding exposure or of proper
care after exposure. For assistance
in. warding off incipient atta
c~ ; s and in affording relief at
all stages, especially for deep
seated persistent cases of colds
on the lungs or bronchial tubes
which threaten pr eumonia, lung
f.ever and more serious complications,
this balsam will be
found very effective.
Healing and soothing to the
raw throat and lungs. Relieves
the painful coughing and helps
the system to throw off in the
natural way through the bowels
and excretory organs, an accumulation
of waste and poisonous
matter. Otherwisethiswaste
and poison is thrown off by the
mucous membranes of the
throat, clogging the air passages,
causing much tlistres~ ~

Earache. Watkins Liniment or
Watkins Pain-Oleum is a very good
remedy for this disease. Earache is
generally caused by exposure to cold
winds. It frequently happens that the
cause is found in the hardening of ear
wax. In this case put a couple of
drops of sweet oil in the ear and in a
day or two the wax will be sufficiently
softened so that it can be washed
out with warm water. Watkins Menthol-
Camphor Ointment warmed and
rubbed about the ear and into the
canal gives relief.
Eczema. Such other diseases as
salt rheum and tetter are varieties of

Falling of the Womb. Hundreds of
women are afflicted with this disease
and are yet unaware of the true cause
of their ill health. To effect relief
it is necessary to stimulate and

womb in place. Watkins Female Tonic
is scientifically prepared to effect internal
medication of this organ, reducing
inflammation and giving
strength to support the womb in
place. Daily vaginal douches of hot
