'
9 -ollawing the tradition begun last year with a guest appearance by members of
the Vermeer Quartet, this year Bernard Greenhouse, one of the truly great
cellists of the twentieth century, joins the Arianna String Quartet as a guest
artist for this special celebration concert.
ur7a/J ernard Greenhouse was born in New Jersey. He studied at the Juilliard School and made his New York recital debut at Tawn Hall to resounding critical
acclaim. He then went to Europe for an audition with Pablo Casals, which
resulted in two years of study with the great Spanish master. Of his student, Casals
wrote, "Bernard Greenhouse is not only a remarkable cellist, but what I esteem more, a
dignified artist."
Mr. Greenhouse has been a noted soloist and chamber musician for over fifty years,
earning a reputation as one of the major interpreters on his instrument. He has been
heard in recital in most of the major cities of Europe and America, as well as soloist with
major orchestras and chamber ensembles. Widely recorded on a wealth of labels, he was a
founding member of the renawned Beaux Arts Trio, an ensemble with which he was
associated for thirty-two years.
Mr. Greenhouse has served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and the
State University of New York at Stony Brook, from which he received an honorary
doctorate. He has recently retired Emeritus from his position as WCSL Professor at
Rutgers University and, as well, from the New England Conservatory. He continues to
conduct master classes in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and was recently
awarded the National Service Award by Chamber Music America.
U/- he Arianna String Quartet would like to give special thanks to Provost
U Ronald Collins, Dean Barry Fish, Judy Tatum and the EMU Office of
Admissions, Vice President Larry Smith, everyone at the EMU Foundation,
Gordon McQuere, Head, Music Department, Kat McKinney (the wonderful artist who
created the art on the invitations), and the newly formed Arianna Friends circle. Without
the support of these people, tonight's performance would not have been possible.
