Born in New Jersey, Bernard
Greenhouse the distinguished
American ce li ist, started his
formai training as a fellowship
student with Felix Salmond
of the Juil liard School of
Music where he studied for
four years, during which time
he gave many solo performances
and appeared with
chamber music organizations.
Afterwards, he served as first
cellist with the Columbia
Symphony Orchestra for
three years. His duties
eventually brought him to
Washington, D.C. where he
performed 22 solo works as
soloist with the United States
Symphony Orchestra. Mr.
Greenhouse made his debut
in 1946 in Town Hall, N.Y.,
with overwhelming praise
from press and public. He
has served under many of the
greatest conductors, including
Arturo Toscanini, Dimitri
Mitropoulos and Bruno
• Walter. Versatility has been
the ·theme of his ca reer- a
çareer which has found
success in many fields : solo
recitals, orchestral appearances
throughout the world,
association with the eminent
Beaux Arts Trio of New York,
and soloist with the famous
Bach Aria Group. An amazing
number of recordings have
added to the world-wide
reputation of this great
cellist. Mr. Greenhouse is on
the Faculty of the Juilliard
School of Music, the
Manhattan School of Music
in New York, and Indiana
University. He plays the
famous "Paganini"
Stradivarius ce llo dated 1707.
Le violoncelliste américain,
Bernard Greenhouse, est originaire
du New Jersey.
Boursier de l'Ecole de
musique Juilliard, il étudie
pendant quatre ans avec Felix
Salmond. Etudiant remarquablement
doué, il se
produit déjà en récital ou en
compagnie d'orchestres de
chambre. Engagé par
l'Orchestre symphonique de
Columbia, il occupe pendant
trois années successives le
poste de premier violoncelle.
Au cours de la même période,
il est invité par le Symphonique
des Etats-Unis à prêter
son concours de soliste à
vingt-deux concerts donnés à
Washington. Ses débuts au
Town Hall de New York en
1946 sont unanimement
acclamés par la presse et le
public. Ils sont suivis de
concerts sous lad irection des
plus prestigieux chefs
d'orchestres, dont Arturo
Toscanini, Dimitri
Mitropoulos et Bruno Walter.
Artiste aux quai ités multiples,
Bernard Greenhouse a délibérément
orienté sa carrière
vers différents domaines.
Récitals, tournées internationales
de concerts, collaboration
avec le Beaux Arts Trio
de New York, apparitions en
soliste avec le célèbre Bach
Aria Group se succèdent avec
le même succès. Enfin, un
nombre impressionnant
d'enregistrements a largement
contribué à faire connaître
dans le monde le génie du
grand violoncelliste. Bernard
Greenhouse est aujourd'hui
membre des Ecoles de
musique Juilliard et
Manhattan de New York,
ainsi que de l'université
Indiana. Il faut noter que
Bernard Greenhouse joue sur
le fameux violoncelle
Stradivarius "Paganini", daté
1707.
