The Boston -;ymphony Orchestra: I
under Serge Koussevitzky's direction,
prefaced this week's regular subscription
concerts at Carnegie Hall and
the Brooklyn Academy of Music with
a special concert last night In the
former auditorium for the benefit of
the orchestra's pension fund, which
prollted by the presence of a large
audience with many standees. Dr. l
Kousaevltzky began his program with 1
Mendelssohn's "Italian" symphony,
and closed It with the fourth symphony
of Tchalkovsky. The soloist of
the evening WIU! Jascha Heifetz, playing
Mendelssohn's violin concerto.
Mr. Heifetz was in excellent form,
and the orchestra gave a remarkably
well proportioned accompaniment
characterized by notable finesse of \
dynamic shading and the exceptional
quality of tone which Is one o! the
major features of the Bostonians' concerts.

pretatlon of Tchalkovsky's score. Like
Other organizations, the Boston Symphony
gives an annual pension fund
benefit concert In Its own citJy, but

that It has given a special concert tor
this purpose here,
The usual dates or the regular evening
Carnegie Hall and Brooklyn concerts
have been transposed, Dr. Koussevltzky
and his men playing at the
Academy of Music tonight and In Carnegie
Hall tomorrow. The afternoon
sullscrlptlon concert wiiJ, according to
the usual practice, take place en Saturday.
, Two young pianists, Hannah Klein
and Pauline Gilbert, who have both
studied at the JuiiJiard Graduate
School with Mme. Olga Samarolf, gave
their tlrst New York concert !IS f. twQplano
team last night In Town Hall,
beginning with Harold Bauer's transcription
of a Bach prelude and fugue
1n C minor and Miss Klein's wellwrought
transcription of Handel's
ruth organ concerto. Miss Gilbert was
also rPpresented as a transcriber In
Three Character Pieces by Mendelssohn;
Bernard Greenhouse, Alan Shulman
and Harry Shapiro were assisting
artists In Schumann's andante and
variations tor two pianos, two cellos
and horn. _
