After
obtaining
his
medical
degree
from
Meharry
Medical
College
and
serving
his
residency
at the
Polyclinic
Hospital
in
New
York
City
,
Evans
began
practicing
medicine
in
Greensboro
in
1935
.
Dr
.
Evans
was
very
much
involved
in the
wider
community
. He
served
a
crucial
role
as
chariman
of the
Mayor's
Committee
on
Human
Relations
during
the
civil
rights
demonstrations
in
1960
and
served
an
equally
important
role
for
ten
years
as a
member
of the
Greensboro
Board
of
Education
. He
received
the
NAACP's
Man
of the
Year
award
in
1981
.
