Description
March 1 , 1951 . 2 negs . 4:30 p.m . Keeley Institute was founded in about 1900 when it bought Blandwood Mansion from the Morhead family , whose patriarch , former Gov . John Motley Morehead , died in 1866 . Keeley made some changes to the mansion's exterior , including removing two dependencies - the governor's law office and the kitchen , each connected to the main house by two colonnades. . Keeley may have added a dorm later removed . Keeley treated people with alcohol and drug problems . A second photo shows an old resident of the institute seated in a rocker on the porch eyeing with fascination a squirrel foraging on the porch near him. When Keeley closed in the 1960s , a supermarket tried to buy the site with plans to demolish the mansion . A group of local preservationist protested and enlisted Guilford College , which had a building in the next block that served as its downtown campus , to loan , if not mistaken , $250,000 so the preservationist could buy Blandwood and preserve it . This was the start of Preservation Greensboro , which today has its headquarters in the restored mansion , which is a National Historic Landmark because of its Italinate architecture and its architect , Alexander Jackson Davis of New York , who also designed the state capitol and the old Dorothy Dix Hospital in Raleigh and the Playmakers Theatre in Chapel Hill . The mansion is open for public tours . The law office and kitchen dependecies and the colonnades have been reconstructed . A carriage house in a spot different from the original one also has been built as a rental place for receptions and meetings .
