B. If Grantseeker were to receive a Guilford Green Foundation grant for the particular initiative, project or activity described in (IV.A) above, please describe the method of implementation, whether staffing will be involved, and the number and type of volunteers, if any, who will support implementation.
Last year we created a 3”x4” “SAFE” sticker. We ordered 1,000 and most of these have been distributed. In 2006-2007 we plan an aggressive campaign to have these displayed in school classrooms and offices in public and private schools. We will target middle schools, high schools and college/universities. In addition we will target support individuals in the community to display them at their offices, car bumpers, etc. Stickers have our name and website printed on them. Students will be actively involved in our campaign to identity supportive educators and attempting to have them display in their schools. We are already receiving enthusiastic requests for the stickers. We will provide the stickers at no charge. We realize there will be a number of stickers that will be taken but not displayed. We will distribute them in workshops, presentations and programs. Not all people will display them but those individuals will recognize what it means. It can be one step toward their future support of LGBT individuals.
C. If Grantseeker were to receive a Guilford Green Foundation grant for the particular initiative, project or activity described in (IV.A) above, what outcome is envisioned? What accomplishments or changes may result? 4
“Making the Invisible, Visible!” is our goal. Widespread display of these stickers will will help students and educators aware of the number of people willing to support LGBT individuals and allies in our schools. We envision a time where LGBT students in every school will be able to easily find educators and other students who support them. Our goal is to have LGBT support be the norm in schools, not the exception.
D. What tools or measures will you apply to evaluate the success or failure of a Guilford Green Foundation grant?
We will measure our success by the distribution and display of the stickers in the schools and community. We realize there will be a certain amount of stickers that will be taken but not displayed. We will distribute in workshops, presentations and programs. Not all people will display them but those individuals will recognize what it means. It can be one step toward their future support of LGBT individuals.
VI. OTHER INFORMATION
E. Is there anything not already covered in this Grant Application you would like the Guilford Green Foundation to know about your organization or institution?
We completed our first fiscal year will end on June 30th. The creation of GSAFE has gone very well. At our first Annual Meeting we increased our board to a total of 20 people. We now have four high school students on our board, one Guilford County School Board member, three African Americans and about 50% straight allies.
In addition, we operate the GSAFE Student Network. This is designed for high school students to share the work of their GSA or Diversity Clubs. We have active participation from several public schools, the Greensboro Day School and a strong group from the American Hebrew Academy.
F. Assuming money were no object, what unmet needs in our community would your organization or institution like to see addressed?
My understanding is that GLASS, the LGBT teen support group, is struggling to stay in operation. This support group is a very important function in our community and its continuance is crucial. Most of the students involved in our GSAFE work are advocates and are sometimes classified as “thrivers”. Students who need GLASS are often those who still need confidentiality and are often not public LGBT advocates. We need to do whatever it takes to keep GLASS operational.
