Equality NC Applauds Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools' Stand
Against Discrimination
Equality NC applauds the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System for taking a
stand against the State Board of Education's recent decision to remove the list
of protected categories, including sexual orientation and gender identity, from
the standards for training school counselors and school social workers about
diversity and discrimination.
The city school system announced last week that they will be sending a letter
to the State School Board asking them to put the list of protected categories
back in.
"Students need to know that elected officials are supportive of people with
different sexual orientations, and are prepared to support them in our

schools," said Superintendent Neil Pedersen told the Herald-Sun. "It's a real
issue that we must address in a forthright and positive manner."
"It is critical that our staff understand the issues surrounding sexual
orientation," Pedersen said, in a memo to the local school board. "Substituting

of higher education on how to prepare prospective counselors and social
workers."

Give the Gift of Equality this Holiday Season
Why brave long lines this Friday to do your holiday shopping when you can buy
a gift that makes a difference right now? Equality NC has two great ways you
can give the gift of equality this winter:
1. Make a gift contribution to Equality NC in honor of a friend or family
member! It's easy and a lot more thoughtful than more socks or scented
candles. You can give them a gift membership at $35, a household
membership at $50, or an honorary contribution in any amount! We'll
send them a nice holiday card letting them know of your gift in their
honor. Click here to make your gift contribution today.
2. Give fabulous Equality NC logo gear! Order great T-Shirts, hats, bags
and accesories and ship them directly to your friends and family with a
personal gift message! They can wear their support for equal rights and
justice, and you can know that a portion of your purchase supports
Equality NC's work. Click here to start browsing now.
Either way, you'll give a great, meaningful gift that your loved ones are bound
to appreciate.
