Greensboro, NC Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA’s) and student allies across Guilford County are joining together this Thursday to participate in the “Gay, Fine By Me” T-Shirt Project. GSA’s are student organizations devoted to the eradication of anti-gay bias in their school communities. The “Gay, Fine By Me” T-shirt was created to challenge the perception that schools are homophobic communities and was started by Duke University students in the spring of 2003. More information can be found at their website, www.finebyme.org.
Students at Grimsley, Northwest, Eastern, Smith, Southwest, Greensboro Day School and American Hebrew Academy have acquired the “gay, fine by me” tee shirts that were made available through the local GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) chapter. On Thursday, November 20, participating students will begin wearing their t-shirts, which come in several colors and are adorned only with simple white lettering that reads: “gay? fine by me.” Student activists hope to change the perception that tolerance is unpopular and show that their schools are not bastions of anti-gay bias but are rather places of tolerance and acceptance.
