. He
received
his
elementary
education
in
Laurinburg
,
N.C.
. and
matriculated
at
Biddle
Institute
, the
forerunner
to
Johnson
C
.
Smith
University
in
Charlotte
. He
studied
in the
Leonard
School
of
Pharmacy
at
Shaw
University
in
Raleigh
,
N.C.
,
graduating
in
1897
.
McNair
was a
steward
on a
ship
during
the
Spanish-American
war
.
After
the
war
McNair
opened
a
pharmacy
in
Greensboro
,
N.C
.
It
was
first
located
on
Fayetteville
Road
(now
Martin
Luther
King
,
Jr
.
Drive)
, and
later
moved
to
900
East
Market
Street
.
McNair
was the
first
African
American
pharmacist
in
Greensboro
.
