George
Gabriel
was a
small
business
owner
who
operated
two
grocery
stores
in
East
Greensboro
. The
Gabriel
Grocery
was
located
at the
corner
of
East
Market
Street
and
Dean
, and
Gabriel's
Food
Center
was at the
corner
of
Dean
and
West
Washington
Street
. The
latter
was
situated
diagonally
across
from
Bennett
College
, and
became
very
popular
with the
young
women
of
Bennett
College
.
Mr
.
Gabriel
was
very
generous
with
store
credit
–
and also with
small
loans
to
local
people
who
were
looking
for
money
to
start
a
business
–
and the
students
respected
him and
frequented
his
stores
. This
collection
,
primarily
of
copies
of
pages
with
student
autographs
to
Mr
.
Gabriel
,
demonstrates
the
affection
and
respect
they had for him. His
son
,
local
attorney
Richard
Gabriel
,
worked
at his
father’s
grocery
stores
,
until
he
went
to
Duke
University
, in the
early
1960s
.
