Hyla
Cundiff
were
born
and
grew
up
together
in
Wilkes
County
,
N.C
. In their
professional
careers
each
made
significant
contributions
to the
education
of
African
American
students
,
both
in
Wilkesboro
and
Greensboro
.
Fred
Cundiff
came
to
Greensboro
to
teach
in
1954
. He
became
the
first
African-American
Assistant
School
Superintendant
in
1969
,
playing
a
crucial
role
in the
relatively
peaceful
integration
of
Greensboro's
school
system
in the
early
1970s
.
Hyla
Cundiff
was an
elementary
school
teacher
for
over
30
years
,
primarily
at the
Washingon
Street
,
Bluford
, and
Vandalia
Elementary
schools
. Her
thirteen
years
of
volunteer
work
with the
American
Cancer
Society
brought
her the
distinct
honor
of the
prestigious
"

Who
Care
"
award
in
1989
.
