Black Students
Form BASIB
Guilford's black students,
calling themselves "Brothers and
Sisters in Blackness (BASIB),"
recently met and organized.
According to Clarence
Yokely, newly-elected president
of the group, the students do
not plan either to form a
militant organization or to
separate themselves from the
campus. Rather, the purpose of
the group is for black students
to maintain an identity within
themselves, and to enlighten
black students and others on the
role of the black in society and
on his significance in history.
Other officers that have been
elected include Meri-Li Douglas,
vice president; Gertrude Judd,
secretary; Jim Cochran,
treasurer; Harold Allen,
chairman, Grievance Committee;
Vinetta Bell and Alexander
Monroe, co-chairmen, Activities
Committee; and Pat McSwain,
Newsletter editor.
Future plans for "BASIB"
include forums, speakers, and
production of off-Broadway
plays written by black writers.
An art exhibit is planned in the
near future. These events will be
open to all Guilford students, in
the hope that they will be of
interest and benefit to the entire
campus.
