As Basis for Production
Spanish students of Guilford College have the opportunity to see an
original Spanish movie, Pepitu Jimenez, next Wednesday at 3 and 7:30
p»m., in Aycock auditorium.
This movie is adapted from Juan
Valera's novel, Pepita Jimenez, a
classic in Spanish literature, and
will be of special interest to the
entire campus as well as all students studying the Spanish language
as a part of their curriculum. In
most colleges this novel is required
reading in third year Spanish, so
this would afford students a special opportunity to see this novel
take form through the medium of a
motion picture.
Scenes from the production, which
was made in Mexico, have previously appeared in Mademoiselle
magazine. Manuel de Falla, a well-
known contemporary Spanish composer, has arranged the musical
score and provided the background
accompaniment.
The hero in Pepita Jimenez, Laiis
de Vargas, studying for the priesthood, falls in love with the buxom
widow Pepita, without realizing
what is happening to him. His
emotions and scruples are conveyed
to a clerical uncle in the form of
letters. He finally gives up his contemplated career, marries! Pepita,
and settles down to the life of a
landed proprietor.
