Conference with Mr. Apple of the Do-Nut Dinette
(Present were Chancellor Singletary, the President of Student Government and the Dean of Students).
March 13, 1963
The Chancellor told Mr. Apple that he had received from the Negro students
at the College a letter requesting him to use his "authority and influence"
to bring about desegregation of the establishments in the area on Tate
Street known as the Corner. He added that the Student Legislature was considering a resolution to the same effect. This informal conference had
been arranged to explore the situation and to make clear the Chancellor's
position which is:
1. The Chancellor has no authority to dictate policy to the
business men at the Corner.
2. The Chancellor is requesting unofficially that all students
at the Woman's College be served at the Corner eating places
and admitted to the Cinema Theatre.
3. If the present policy of segregation continues, it is likely
that the students will resort to picketing and to a boycott.
The Administration will not foster such activities, but it
cannot prevent them. The ensuing publicity will be unpleasant
and the financial loss to the affected establishments may be
heavy.
Mr. Apple stated that he was aware of the impending crisis and that he
appreciated the opportunity to discuss possible ways of avoiding it.
He will explore the situation with his partners and report within a week or
ten days.
The Chancellor requested that, if the Apple Brothers decide to maintain the
status quo, they present their reasons for doing so.
