DISASTER FACES NATION...
A coalition of Northern Republicans and Southern Democrats, supporting the moneyed interests, have passed amendments to the OPA bill
in the House which will wipe out all except
rent control. Chester Bowles, Economic Stabilizer, and Paul Porter, head of the OPA, in disgust threatened to resign if the bill passes
the Senate.
Here are the proposed amendments, which would
add billions of dollars to the cost of living:
!• Decontrol Amendment. requiring price ceilings
to be removed altogether when production of any
commodity exceeds its production in the period
July i, 1940-June 30, 1941. This would sweep
price controls from commodities making up at
least half the cost of living.
2. Cost-plus-profit Amendment, requiring OPA's
ceilings to cover the current cost of production
and distribution plus a "reasonable" profit for
every product sold by every industry and wholesale and retail trade. (An industrial commission
would decide prices and reasonable profits.)
Auto Dealers' Amendment Sould in effect increase
the "dealer's profit and cost for the consumer
by about $85 or more without increasing production in automobiles.
Wolcott Amendment provides for a rapid elimination of farm product subsidies with corresponding rises in OPA ceilings.
5. Maximum Average Price Amendment, in eliminating
separate price ceilings on different quality
clothing and laying a flat price ceiling for all
clothing, would raise the prices of less expensive lines to those of higher grades. How would
you like to pay $25 for a $5-dress?
*****After the last war., when no price controls existed, the cost of liv
ing doubled. So fsar, under OPA controls, the cost of living has only
increased 30%.
THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO FIGHT FOR REASONABLE PRICES!
THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO FIGHT BREADLINES AND APPLECARTS!
THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE!!

Or write to Sen. Robert A. Taft, leader of'the Rep. opposition to OPA
Tell him that you want the Price Control Act renewed without amendments.
Good news at last...
The S enate passed a revolutionary Housing bill designed to provide
a decent home for every American family. The bill provides for slum
clearance, elimination cf sub-standard dwellings, and urban redevelopment
and average construction of one and a quarter million homes for the next
ten years for those who can only afford to spend from $20 to §40 for
rent or ownership per month. The House still has to pass the bill. Let's
cross our fingers...
Czechoslovakia...
Peril to 785,000 children beyond exaggeration...no milk, fats,
meats, rice...50,000 cases of tuberculosis in Prague alone. Multiply by
all of Europe...and Asia.
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send those, the homeless, the tempest-tost to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
