Grow up or blow up?...The brass hats say the scientists who dis
the atom bomb must keep hands off it's
too dangerous.The Army is blocking the
return to the US of Dr. Nils Bohr,Danish [

In this country,scientists of the Univ.
of Cal. and M.I.T. cannot discuss a new
cyclotrone described in Russian publications years ago!... .The British are hard at|
work on industrial development of atomic
energy, but Amer. firms don't dare move
for fear of being accused of betraying
some secret.
THE UN/I-TEO STATES MUST KOT
LET THE ATOM SECRET IJ&AKOOT.
The last straw...The May-Johnson Bill wil
permit the Army to go into any university^
and remove any professor on "security
grounds", and set up military courts in
peacetime with precedence over civil UBXJ$,
courts with power to put civilians in
jail. Strong pressure is being exerted in^
Congress to pass the bill in view of the recent spy scares.Dr.J.R.Oppen-
heimer, key scientist in Atomic Energy Commission, is firmly opposed to
a plan which would extend army control and hamper scientific research.
An era of industrial warfare?...The Case Bill, which has passed the
House and is due in the Senate about March 15th, looks good on the surface. It provides for voluntary arbitration of labor disputes by govt,
board, 30-day cooling off period, and no violation of contracts. But it
has called forth violent opposition by labor and Senators like Murray of
Montana. It will in fact hamstring labor by:
1: outlawing sympathy strikes between unions engaged
in production and delivery of an item;
■,i 2: outlawing strikes by one union engaged in a job
where another union, doing a different phase of
the work, has a contract;
; 3: outlawing strikes by one union in a plant where
the company has a contract with another union in
another plant doing a different phase of production.
Labor Secretary Lewis B, Fchwellenbach says that "this bill will initial
an era of industrial warfare with the power of the govt, used to destroy
labor unions."
