AGENDA: 1) Selection of representatives to attend the Sept. 10th meeting of
the N.C. Advisory Committee to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission
in Raleigh, and discussion of presentation to be made there.
2) Update on the delegation statement, media response.
3) Report on the Washington, D.C. press conference calling for a
special prosecutor.
Minutes of 9/1 Meeting
Present: Charles Davis, John Erwin, Ed Burrows, Debra Underwood, Rev. Underwood,
Joyce Johnson, Sol Jacobs, Gayle Korotkin
(1) Delegation Statement
The final statement agreed upon by all ten members of the delegation was
presented. Thanks are due to all those who worked hard to draft, edit and type
it. Sol Jacobs was delegated to take it to the newspaper and ask for it to be
printed. As soon as Sol gets the word that it will be printed, it is to be sent to
other newspapers and media, and be released to the press generally. People should
not discuss it with the press either until we get the word from Sol. It became
apparent during this discussion that funds are needed to pay for xerox and postage
expenses in cases like this, unless someone has institutional privileges to cover
such things. Although there was some feeling that the final statement omitted some
significant material from earlier drafts (relating to conspiracy and to Brereton's
statement), it was felt it was important to get it out as quickly as possible and
to have the agreement of all ten delegates to the statement, and that the statement
does express the important points. Also, each delegate is free to add additional
comments beyond the statement as she/he sees fit.
(NOTE: Sol has since reported that the paper has agreed to print the statement,
but we don't know when. The statements were therefore released to the press Thursday,
Sept. 2, and were mailed to 50+ papers, etc.)
(2) North Carolina Advisory Committee to Civil Rights Commission - Meeting Sept. 10th
Mr. Davis advised that Dr. Tommye Young, chairperson of the Advisory Committee,
has indicated that the group could make a presentation at the next meeting, Sept. 10th
at 1:00 at the Radisson Hotel in Raleigh, concerning the grand jury, at which time
the Advisory Committee could be asked to support the request for a special prosecutor.
One of our representatives could be a lawyer (Lewis or Gayle) to fill in legal details.
Mr. Erwin said he might be able to go but couldn't commit himself definitely until
the next meeting. An additional volunteer would be desirable. Sol is a member of
the Committee. This will be finalized at the next meeting (Sept. 87. Gayle is to
send Dr. Young a letter, to formally request the opportunity for the group to appear.
(3) Press conference Sept. 7 in Washington, D.C, calling for special prosecutor
Gayle reported that on Sept, 7 there will be a press conference and reception
in Washington, to mark the filing of legal papers on behalf of the demonstrators,
asking the court to order the Attorney-General to apply for appointment of a special
prosecutor as required by the Ethics in Government Act. Concerned Citizens is
definitely invited to send a representative. Mr. Davis and Sol Jacobs said they
would make efforts to recruit a volunteer to attend, as there was agreement the
group should have a representative there from Greensboro.
