CONCERNED CITIZENS OF THE NOVEMBER THIRD INCIDENT

Dear Concerned Citizen:
I would like to invite you to a special evening meeting of the Concerned
Citizens of the November Third Incident. The meeting is to be held on this
Thursday, July 15th, 7:30 P. M. at the Shiloh Baptist Church, 1210 South
Eugene Street. We normally meet on Wednesdays at noon at the Trevi Fountain
Restaurant over lunch. We thought it important, however, to have at least
one meeting this summer at a time that might be more convenient to interested
parsons. We hope you can join us.
The memory of the November 3, 1979 tragedy still lingers in the minds of
Greensboro residents. And, unfortunately, the not guilty verdict of November
17, 1980 did little to relieve our concerns. Now the Special Federal Grand
Jury is ill session over in Winston. We have high hopes that this body will
conduct a thorough investigation and initiate actions to bring about justice
once and for all around November 3rd.
But, not only does this matter concern Greensboro residents, many, many
justice-loving people beyond our small community see their guarantee of justice tightly linked to this case. Four different Fact-Finding Teams have already visited Greensboro since the Grand Jury was convened. Among them have
been prominent individuals such as Dr. Loretta Williams of the Unitarian
Universalist Association; Rev. Tyrone Pitts, Director of Racial Justice of
the National Council of Churches; Sister Carolyn Burgholzer of the Sisters
of Mercy; Dr. Massie Kennard, Director of Minority Affairs of the Lutheran
Church in America; Ms. Mary Jane Patterson of the United Presbyterian Church
of America; and Rev. J. Ray Butler, Vice-President of the North Carolina
State Baptist Convention. These individuals, as well as others, have come
to learn more about the facts and implications of the case and to convey to
the Grand Jury in whatever manner available to them, their concern that justice
prevail in this case. This display of concern from around the country has
been most significant and hopefully it will have a positive impact on the
final outcome of the case.
To date, however, there has been no strong call from the citizens of
Greensboro for-* thorough and conclusive investigation by the Grand Jury.
We need such a call. We need a delegation from our own community to visit
U. S. Attorney Michael Johnson to have him convey to the Grand Jury our
concern that a sense of justice be restored to our community after this
tragic event. In addition, we need to call upon all persons in our community who might have information or testimony which might be useful in
resolving this case, to come forward in the name of justice. These are
two of the matters we would like to discuss at Thursday night's meeting.
In addition, we will have an update on the developments related to the Grand
Jury and a briefing on the activities of the Concerned Citizens to date,
particularly a recent appearance before the Congressional Black Caucus.
Please attend this meeting. We would like to share our thoughts with
you and to receive your thinking and input. If you cannot attend this
particular meeting, give me a call to let us know you are with us.
Very sincerely yours
Charles E. Davis
