Report on the Greensboro delegation's meeting with representatives of
the Justice Dept. concerning the Winston-Salem grand jury investigating
November 3rd. Discussion of follow-up to that meeting.
On Aug. 12, a delegation of 9 Greensboro residents, representatives
of various sectors of the community, had a lengthy meeting with
Michael Johnson (the Justice Dept. attorney in charge of the grand jury),
Nora Jean Flannagan (also a Justice Dept. attorney), U.S. Attorney
Kenneth McAllister, and Thomas Brereton (the FBI agent who is chief
investigator for the grand jury). The delegation raised quite a
number of important questions, and received some answers.
All members of that delegation are encouraged to come and share
their impressions and suggestions for future action. One issue which
Sjj! ™ needs to be discussed is how the information gained can be shared
with the public. A number of people have suggested writing a report
and/or having a press conference.
Special Prosecutor - carrying out decision to support that request
g to '& CO
§ h 5 T3 At tne last meeting, the group decided to support the request
% 2 cd cd f°r a special prosecutor to conduct the grand jury. Specifically, it
d, ** rt Jjj was decided to approach local organizations and individuals for
0 , "g >, endorsements of a statement "Call for a Special Prosecutor" which has
q, g * jB already been endorsed by Rev. W. W. Finlator, Rev. Leon White, and 9
ctj « o" W other people (including 3 from Greensboro). The decision was to
o, 2j 3 u approach organizations first - such as the NAACP - and then individuals.
§ n u m Tne petitions or letters of endorsement could be submitted to the Justice
S^^ § Dept. in Sept. (the 7?), when there will be a big press conference in
B Washington, and the filing of legal action for appointment of a special
prosecutor.
3) Gordon Chamberlin's statement - putting it to use.
There has been some disagreement over approaching clergy first or
the community first, and whether we need an action program to suggest
to churches, etc. before we can use the statement.
This week there has been no press coverage of the grand jury, even
though it met 2 or 3 days, and even though there was important testimony.
What if anything can be done to improve press coverage of this and other
important issues?
